    • Conquistadors โ†’ soldiers who came to new world for adventure & wealth
  • Pizarro (conquered Inca civilization) spent many years working with Vasco Nunez Balboa
    • Explored Panama together
    • Fought off snakes, crocodiles, mosquitoes; hacked through thick jungles; climbed mtns.
  • Balboa claimed all lands the Pacific Ocean touched
    • Got tangled in political rivalry with Panamaโ€™s governor
    • Balboa eventually imprisoned, given an unfair trial, & beheaded
