Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

  • The County has installed nine free, publicly accessible EV charging stations in convenient locations throughout the County
  • The tenth station will be reinstalled at the York Library when renovations are complete (Fall 2022). 
  • Future plans include installation of a charging station at Vehicle Maintenance and two stations at Development and Planning Office for future electric fleet vehicles/hybrids

Gas-powered Vehicles Converted to Propane-Fueled

  • 18 County vehicles were converted to utilize propane as a fueling source
  • Our fuel site currently provides propane fueling for converted vehicles
  • Propane has kept fuel costs down when gas prices spiked this year (significant savings)

Building Renovations/�New Construction

  • York County incorporates energy efficiency practices into all new construction and renovation projects
    • York Library renovation
      • Includes thick glass for better quality insulation
      • Fluid-Applied Membrane Air Barrier and Self-Adhering Sheet Waterproofing applied around the entire exterior of the building to reduce air leakage
    • Law Enforcement Center (Sheriff’s Office)
      • 140 Geothermal Wells have been installed

Solar Arrays

  • County continues to evaluate opportunities for solar generation sites

Energy Efficient Lighting/Electrical

  • York County is currently in the process of changing out all of our Dominion light poles from High Pressure Sodium lights to LED’s (ongoing project)
  • The County will change out just over 200 light pole heads at the waterfront up to Ballard St (new head style, start date TBD) with all LED fixtures.  This conversion will use 1/3 of the electricity of the previous ones
  • All lighting is being replaced with LED lighting at the end of life
  • Current lighting is being replaced with LED at athletic fields (Kiln Creek Park, Dare Elementary School, and Tabb Middle School)
  • Generators considered/installed at several locations for emergency use (lighting upgrades will contribute to load capability improvement)

Stormwater

  • Drainage projects are in progress to improve water drainage in low-lying, flood prone areas
    • Wormley Creek Drainage Improvement is currently underway
  • Stream restoration projects help flooding in residential and commercial areas

Sidewalks/Bikeways

  • York County is constructing a number of sidewalks/bikeways in high-traffic locations
    • There is a 40% increase in foot traffic when sidewalks/bikeways are installed
    • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions due to less driving in the area
    • Overall health improvements due to increased physical exercise

  • Large-scale cleanup events (multiple per year)
