Year 3

  • Your child is now in their first year of KS2.
  • This year will see your child being encouraged to be more independent and responsible.

  • We follow the statutory schemes of learning set by the government.

Core Subjects

In English, we theme our lessons around a high-quality text. During these lessons, we teach skills to develop reading, writing and speaking and listening skills.

5 of 21

  • In Year 3 we will be focusing on spelling half of these common exception words.
  • We will be continuing with daily phonics which focuses on spelling rules and patterns.

Core Subjects

Reading:

  • Your child will continue to bring home a reading book from the SoundsWrite scheme, as well as a coloured book banded book which they choose themselves.
  • Please ensure that you hear your child read 4x a week as in KS1, and sign in their reading diaries. This does not have to be a school book!

Handwriting:

  • In Year 3 we will start to teach the children cursive writing.
  • Please continue to help them develop good muscle control (which leads to the ability to write in length) by giving them opportunities to colour, thread, cook, use Hama beads etc at home.

Core Subjects

In Maths, we follow a mastery approach to ensure knowledge and skills are embedded. Children will enjoy a variety of activities to develop their fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills.

Core Subjects

In Science, we are covering some great topics that children love, such as: rocks and soils and forces and magnets. Children use the 5 scientific enquiry types through a variety of lessons.

Wider Curriculum

Alongside core subjects, we cover a variety of topics during our foundation subject lessons.

These are the subjects that fire the imagination and that children remember. These are also the lessons that will get your child talking at home, so you might enjoy finding out a little about the topics they are learning so you can chat about them together.

Supporting your child at home…

For English, the single most important thing that you can do is to hear your child read. Good readers make good writers because they are exposed to a greater variety of vocabulary, syntax, grammar and style. Give children purposeful writing opportunities (i.e. shopping list, letter to a family member).

Supporting your child at home…

Anything you can do to help Mathematical knowledge go in and stay in is fantastic. Encourage your child to use their maths skills in a real-life context (i.e. cooking, calculating totals when shopping).

Maths Mastery – encourage your child to explain how they got their answer!
