Scratch Directions for Choose Your Own Adventure Story

1. Create and name your file

  • Name your program the same as your title. The first letter of every word in your title should be capitalized. Spelling and grammar count.

  • Press “Share”
  1. Go to www.scratch.mit.edu

  1. Log in to your account:
    1. User name: first name + hawk (in most cases..)
    2. Password: hawkcode

  1. Look for your name in right corner. If it’s not there- call Mrs. White. You must be logged in or your program will not save.�
  2. Press “create” button

2. Download all your backgrounds

  • Go to Google Drive
  • Search for “backgrounds” folder
  • Two finger click on each background you want- select “Download”
  • To import your images into scratch, open scratch and look in the bottom right for the STAGE.

  • Hover over the “new Background” button and select “Upload Backdrop”

3. Create your Title Page

Name your page “title page”

To edit, press “Convert to Vector” button! You need to do this before you add text.

4. Size your image

  • To make your image bigger click the arrow tool
  • click on your background image.
  • Pull the blue squares to make bigger.

5. Type title and text

  • To add text, pick your color

  • Click the Text Tool and then click on your background
  • Type the title of your story
  • Click the arrow tool then pull your text by the edge to make your text bigger or smaller
  • SPELLING COUNTS! Make sure everything is spelled correctly

4. Upload your other pages.

  • Upload your next image. Repeat the previous process. �
  • Name each page after the NUMBER and a descriptive word. For example:

Pg 2 Woods

Pg 3 Road

Pg 4 Hospital

  • Each page will have a title and some writing. Once you do this for the first page, remember, copy and paste your title and text to the next page to save time.

5. Create your Buttons

  • Go to Google Drive
  • Search for “buttons” folder
  • Pick the button style you like. Press with two fingers on touch pad to download.
  • To import your button into scratch, open scratch and look in the bottom right for the SPRITES.

  • Hover over the “new Sprite” button and select “Upload SPRITE”

6. Make a main button. This will be the first button (on the bottom of your title page. Title it “continue”)

  • Press on the Costume Tab for your sprite/button
  • Press “Convert to Vector
  • Press the Text Tool
  • Choose your color
  • Write “continue”

7. Name & position your sprite

Move your button where you want it

8. Code your Sprite/Continue button

  • Press on the Code Tab for your sprite/button

For EVERY other page you must HIDE this sprite

This is the code for your sprite to show on this page

This is the code that specifies what page to go to when this sprite is clicked

9. Copy your sprite for Page 1

Two-finger click on the “Continue” Sprite and DUPLICATE it

10. Name your Page 1 button after the choice

  • Press on the Costume Tab for your sprite/button
  • Type the new choice

This is my first page

I have 2 buttons-

“Road” and “woods”

11. Update your Code for the Page 1 button

Switch the backdrops to SHOW

Switch the backdrops to HIDE

Type new title for the other button on this page.

12. Name your Page 1a button after the other choice

REPEAT THE PROCESS FOR EACH BUTTON. Name them after the page they are on.

13. Record your Narratives

All of your sound files will be attached to the BACKDROPS.

Click on the thumbnail of your backdrop in your STAGE (bottom right side.)

Click on your backdrops tab.

Select your title page so it shows in your stage area.

14. Record your Narratives

Click on your sound tab

Select Recordx

You should still be able to see your screen so you can read it while recording.

After you record, make sure you

delete any “dead” space at the

beginning of your recording

15. Make sure you name your recording after the PAGE it is on. Record your other pages and name them accordingly.

16. Code your Voiceovers

Click on your CODE tab. You should still be on the “stage”. (NOT the sprites) Follow the code below. Each backdrop should match with its voiceover.

16. Add any ambient noises

Ambient noises are like birds chirping or planes flying overhead.

They can play in the background. BUT- sometimes these files are large and can cause Scratch to crash without saving your work.

Or google drive, search “mp3 files”

Search for WAV files that are UNDER a minute. (If they are longer, often, Scratch will NOT save.)

After each sound file you add- make sure to press FILE, SAVE NOw.
