Biggest Size Culprits: Photos and PDF’s

  • If you are running out of space, and want to keep all your content, you will need to go to the original photos, album by album, resize them to take up less space.
  • Then delete the original files and upload the resized photos.
  • With PDF’s, there are tools to optimize them.

Resizing photos

    • There should be free photo editing applications on your computer. Microsoft Paint or Apple Photo will do it.
    • Take a look around your computer, see what you have and get used to working with it.
    • ALWAYS “SAVE AS” any reduced-sized photos. You will want your original photos in case of problems.
    • Do not resize up. You loose detail and the resulting image will be blurry.
    • Simple math: If you cut the dimensions of the image in half, the new version will be a quarter of the original size.

If Original Photos Are Lost

  • You have two options: selective deletion of photos from the albums; photos that add little value can e deleted. Or, delete older albums. Essentially, either ”prune” or “ cut out”.
  • Do not attempt to use browser screen prints of photos from your web site. The images on screen are too degraded to upsize and repost. You will not be happy!

Re-Sizing PDF’s

  • If you have the original source file in a Microsoft or Libre Office format, you can use the “Save As PDF” option. The result may be far more size efficient. Nitro PDF and other PDF editors have an Optimize File option.
  • NOTE: The file size reduction will be far smaller. Not likely to exceed 20%. It may not be worth the effort..
  • And, you will need to delete the originals, then upload the new files.
