ORCID in Funding Workflows

ORCID for Funding Workflows

ORCID makes it easier for funders to:

  • assess awardee network and influence
  • evaluate grant and program outputs and impact

ORCID for Funding Workflows

ORCID makes it easier for funders to...

  • assess awardee network and influence
  • evaluate grant and program outputs and impact

...by providing a shared, persistent way for funders to:

  1. uniquely identify researchers and stay connected with alumni over time
  2. streamline collection of data about researchers and their activities, to gauge return on investment
  3. confirm relationships with researchers in the wider research landscape

Federal Funding Agencies

  • NIH, AHRQ, and CDC require that individuals supported by research training, fellowship, research education, and career development awards have ORCID iDs
  • DOE – some of the national labs and user facilities require ORCID for proposal submission or in their HR systems
  • EPA, FDA, NASA, Smithsonian, and USDA are all ORCID members, but don’t necessarily require ORCID iDs in workflows (yet)

  • Coming soon, ALL federal agencies will be required to have policies related to “digital persistent identifiers” for individuals receiving federal funding

Adopting Persistent object IDentifiers (PIDs), like ORCID iDs and DOIs, is critically important to the funding community, and the research community more broadly

  • Reduces the administrative burden on applicants and awardees (applications, progress reports);
  • Increase the transparency and discoverability of MRA’s research grants;
  • Make research outcomes from MRA grants accurately identifiable; and
  • Allow MRA to capture more complete, timely, and accurate data to inform our scientific strategy and report MRA-funded advancements to our key stakeholders.
