INTRODUCTION

    • What types of assessments are used at the Primary School?
    • DIBELS, iReady, Math-Universal Screener

3 of 14

Purpose: take stock of students’ achievements or assets

and areas where students may require support that varies

in terms of intensity and duration.

How Use:

• Universal screening starts the discussion

about students who may need different

and/or additional instruction.

• Low scores on the universal screener

can be considered a red flag, indicating

that it would be beneficial to look more closely

at the student's skills and progress.

Quick Descriptions of Screeners

DIBELS

DIBELS ® (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures that can be used to regularly detect risk and monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.

USNS

Universal Number Sense Screener

Quick assessments that help to identify skills and concepts that indicate readiness for grade level content, as well as identify students who would benefit from additional supports.

4

iReady

An assessment designed to help teachers support student learning; provides a beginning path. It’s  adaptive, which means that it adjusts questions to each student’s needs. Each question a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. A series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions. It is expected that a student will get approximately 50% wrong . It provides information about what a student is most likely ready to learn.

Data Stories

6

No story without data.

No data without story..

What stories do we see in the data?

What stories are being told? What stories are not told?

What assumptions do we bring to or make when reviewing the data?

What inferences are we making that are not supported by evidence?

What are our students doing well?

What other data might we need to better understand what we see?

Beliefs and Purpose of Data and Data Discussions

7

Beliefs

  • We believe that the data we review and analyze has value.
  • We believe that in order to engage in thoughtful and (sometimes) challenging conversations, we need to approach this work from a curious and collaborative stance.
  • We believe data can be used to increase educator collaboration and nurture trusting cultures.
  • We believe that there are stories behind the data and it is our work to unearth those stories to know the whole child.

Purpose

Our conversations about data are designed to engage in reflective practice, make informed instructional decisions, support educators with growth opportunities, allocate resources, and celebrate successes.
