  1. Nativism: An opposition to the presence of immigrants or the flow of immigrants into one’s home country
  2. Bato: Spanish for homeboy

  4. Ventriloquism: Artform where a person changes/hides their voice so that it appears that a puppet or doll is speaking

  1. George, the defendant's’ lawyer, says: “The first murder case I ever tried; & won...was for a Filipino...I was paid exactly three dollars & fifty cents…” (41).
  2. Why does George argue that the defendants should be allowed to change their hair/clothes? Explain. What does the judge’s decision reveal about the trial?
  3. Henry claims he did not commit the crime. Do you think he committed the murders? Explain with evidence from the text.
  4. What do you make of the reporter, Alice? Assess her character: do you find her interest in the case trustworthy? Explain. What does Alice mean when she calls Henry a, “classic social victim” (Valdez 50).
  5. Find an instance where Valdez comments on gender in society. Explain what the scene is saying about gender and/or expectations for pacuhos v. pachucas.
  6. Alice tells Henry, “We’re all in jail, Henry. Some of us just don’t know it.” Interpret and analyze the line.
  7. Choose a character in Zoot Suit that stands out to you. What about their character or story resonates/intrigues you? Explain.
