What problems have we noticed �in our school?

  • 64% of students from the 5th to the 8th grade spend about 3 hours a day on social networks (on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok)
  • an increase in students with spine problems and obesity
  • lack of creativity
  • lack of fine motor skills
  • anxiety among students from grades 5 to 8 (40%) and fear of failure at school (50%)

Job Shadowing in Selasskoli Primary School �Reykjavik, Iceland (1 week in May 2023)

1. To familiarize ourselves with the school's policies, school structure, organization of classes, extracurricular activities, school management,

and the school's involvement in the local community and its wider region.

2. To observe the following activities and projects implemented at Selasskoli Primary School, Reykjavik:

• The three-year long regional project "East-West creative and technical workshops (Makerspaces)", which emphasizes the

importance of creative use of ICT and aims to develop creativity.

• Teaching methods of Auður Eysteinsdóttir, art teacher, and of Björk Gunnbjörnsdóttir, the design and construction teacher; the

examples of good practice in manual work, which aims to develop creativity and fine motor skills.

• Outdoor learning methods and activities that are focused on ecology and mental health care. To learn how teachers can

encourage students to develop an admiration for what is interesting, fun, and beautiful in nature, and to find ways to learn from the

general laws of nature.

• Outdoor learning methods and activities in which web tools are used in creative ways and for the purpose of encouraging reading,

and reading in nature in specific. Learning about the 5 elements of literacy (Menntamálastofnun's method), which is based on

listening, writing, reading, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

• Methods of using ICT, with an emphasis placed on using the Internet and smart technology in a responsible and constructive way.

• Student self-empowerment program called "Baujan", training on ART skills for students and "The Treasure Search" for boys aged 8 to

10 years. Gain an insight into the work of an occupational therapist who works with children with developmental disabilities and a

supervising teacher who creates a good class spirit and strengthens the open-mindedness and creativity of students.

3. Cross-cultural activities - getting to know Icelandic culture, environment, history, sightseeing, presentation of Croatian culture, discussions

about further cooperation of the two schools.

Our expected learning outcomes: What do we want to learn? �

  • new methods of implementing outdoor activities that include a creative use of ICT in exploratory learning, with the aim of developing information literacy;

  • how to encourage reading for the purpose of developing reading literacy, in-depth reading, and remembering;

  • how to encourage development of students’ fine motor skills, and how to work with the gifted students.

  • how to implement literacy workshops.
  • methods for strengthening students’ mental health and for working with sensitive groups;

  • how to use ICT for student empowerment workshops and how to implement creative outdoor workshops;
  • examples of good practice (to learn about the Baujan program, about training on ART skills for working with gifted students, The Treasure Search);
  • creative approaches and activities for working with gifted students.

In conclusion, we are interested in:

  1. Outdoor activities: outdoor reading activities, outdoor ecology workshops, empowering students through use of mindfulness techniques, outdoor language workshops;

2. Development of creativity: workshops on the creative use of ICT; workshops on cultural heritage

that implement activities which can develop students’ fine motor skills; creative thinking workshops

and mindfulness workshops; creative linguistic games;

3. Mental health strengthening activities: self-empowerment workshops; in-depth reading workshops;

4. Creative and functional use of digital technology: exploratory learning and creative use of ICT

outdoors; use of ICT for applying mindfulness techniques that can enable student self-

development; the use of ICT in various segments of creating multimedia presentations.
