MIDPOINT EVALUATION
Sugar Labs
Adding Lesson Plans to Music Blocks
Stuti Jain
Project Overview
Problem Statement
Music education lacks structured digital lesson plans. Students using Music Blocks have no guided pathways, making it difficult for educators to scaffold learning or for students to progress meaningfully through musical concepts.
Objectives & Target Users
Integrate interactive lesson plans directly into Music Blocks. Target users include 7–12 educators designing curricula and students exploring music composition - enabling goal-oriented, self-paced learning experiences.
Why Lesson Plans Are Needed
Guided learning pathways improve engagement, retention, and musical understanding. Structured lessons provide context, reduce cognitive overload, and empower teachers with ready-to-use, customizable instructional content.
Midpoint Milestones
All midpoint milestones have been completed on schedule. Expected deliverables included:
✅ Expected Milestones
Beyond all required milestones, two additional features were implemented ahead of schedule:
(1) Explorer Journal – a reflective learning log allowing students to record lesson insights and notes
(2) Contextual Help Cards – a reusable, discoverable help system redesigned with mentor feedback.
Both features significantly enhance the learning experience.
🚀 Achieved & Beyond
Week 1–2 Progress
• Designed core lesson data structure (JSON schema)
• Built LessonBlock loader and parser in Music Blocks
• Established story-to-lesson linkage architecture
• Created placeholder UI panel for lesson rendering
• Verified integration with existing block palette system
Week 1 – Framework Foundation
• Integrated narrative story layer into lesson flow
• Implemented sequential story panels with lesson triggers
• Designed badge-unlock logic tied to lesson completion
• Refined modal display for story + lesson co-rendering
• Conducted initial self-review and mentor sync on narrative UX
Week 2 – Story Integration
Week 3–4 Progress
User testing revealed that learners struggled with text-heavy screens. Content was significantly reduced and visual storytelling was enhanced using illustrated panels and step-by-step graphics. Mentor feedback guided a cleaner layout with stronger visual flow and improved pacing across lessons.
Week 3: Testing & Refinement
Mentor feedback introduced a transpose helper tool to assist learners with pitch and key concepts. Graphics were redesigned for clarity and consistency. Visual assets now align with Sugar Labs' playful aesthetic while maintaining pedagogical accuracy and supporting diverse learner needs.
Week 4: Transpose Helper & Graphics
Explorer Journal
The Explorer Journal was introduced as a dedicated space for learners to document reflections after completing each lesson. It goes beyond midpoint requirements, supporting metacognitive learning by encouraging students to think critically about what they learned, what surprised them, and what they want to explore next.
Key Features:
• Multiple journal entries per lesson
• Full edit and delete capability
• General notes alongside structured reflections
• Personal learning documentation that persists across sessions
• Encourages self-directed, reflective learning habits
Contextual Help Cards
A reusable help-card system was introduced to provide discovery guidance at key moments in each lesson. Cards were redesigned based on mentor feedback to feature a cleaner, more intuitive UI. Each card surfaces contextual hints without interrupting the learner's flow, supporting self-directed exploration and reducing cognitive overload.
The system is built for future scalability — new cards can be authored and attached to any lesson block without modifying core logic. This makes the help framework reusable across all current and upcoming Music Blocks lesson content.
System Architecture
The integrated learning system follows a seamless flow:
Story → Lesson → Exploration → Discovery → Reflection → Explorer Journal → Contextual Help.
