What a fully funded budget can get us:

5.7 Million to differentiated school materials allocations
3.2 Million to school-based security allocations
4.3 Million to ELD for our EMLs
58.6 Million to Special Education for our students with disabilities outside AND inside the general education setting
Smaller class sizes

MCPS Budget & Impacts

5.7 to school materials - it would give principals more money in their school’s individual budget to classroom materials which means less coming out of the teacher’s pocket and more resources and opportunities to engage and explore within our curriculum

ELD - this means more staff, access to curriculum materials to better support their students; we have 5 ELD Teachers and only 2 of them are full time while our population of EMLs are growing; it is only adding 47 staff members to the county, but it is a step in the right direction

Special Ed - Dr. Taylor saw this as one of the the most important pieces to our budget because our county is not even meeting the guidelines, according to Dr. Taylor. We are so understaffed in this department and that impacts ALL students. When a teacher has students with disabilities in the general education classroom with NO support, that takes away from ALL students. We desperately need the additional 188 special education teachers AND the additional special education paraprofessionals that this budget will give us.

All 3 unions (MCEA, SEIU, MCAAP) have come together to show support

Responses from petition

3 unions came together with the BOE AND Dr. Taylor to the People’s Press Conference on Feb 27 to call on the county council and executive to fund the board’s budget ; when we show up together, kids always win

Responses from council members AND Marc Elrich in favor of the budget; here is the response from Marc Elrich:

My recommended budget funded the schools at the level they requested given the current law; however, some of the needs may change depending on action at the state level. The Governor and the Maryland General Assembly are in the process of a solving a budget crisis that the State has not experienced since the Great Recession of 2009. After the state budget is complete, I will likely need to send budget amendments to the Council to make sure that the school budget is fully funded.
