QUANTUM CONSCIOUSNESS: CAN WE PRESERVE FREE WILL IN AN AGE OF AI?

THEORIES OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Spiritual divide; mind and body

Functionalism (intentional), eliminative materialism (coincidental)

Intention inherent in biology in humans and mammals, which gives consciousness to animals and not digital computers

DUALISM

PHYSICALISM

NATURALISM

Neural correlates of consciousness are now beginning to be better explained by artificial intelligence.

Supports physicalist assumption but:

  • AI doesn’t understand content of the thoughts in the way that a person does.
  • What’s going on????

Wave function collapse simply because an observer was watching.

  • Superposition, by definition, is not observable. Anytime you observe you collapse wave function
  • Weak point: what counts as observer/measurement not clearly defined

“Objective Reduction” - electrons can collapse without an observer due to an objective gravitational pull/threshold of unstable superpositions

  • “Orchestrated Objective reduction” - idea that microtubules are capable of quantum computation, hence driving evolution/biology
  • Does self-collapsing and the wave-function have the possibility of meaningful computation?

But how do biological systems protect such quantum systems from outside interference? HOW DO WE TEST/PROVE???

If gravitational forces cause objective reduction, could a change in gravitational force cause a visible change in Orch-OR (measured by spectroscopy)?
