The Monument «The Motherland calls»
75 years ago, on June 22, 1941, the Great Patriotic War began. The victory in it was the greatest torture and the greatest pride for Russia.
In our opinion, it is the most famous monument devoted to the Great Patriotic war. It is located on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd. Here, in fierce battles in 1942-1943, the fate of the battle for Stalingrad was decided, which became a turning point in the entire great patriotic war. Fierce battles of the Soviet troops against the German invaders, who tried to seize the strategic height, took place on the top of the mound.����
IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE END OF THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD, IT WAS DECIDED TO CREATE A GRAND MONUMENT IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN SOLDIERS - DEFENDERS OF STALINGRAD. ITS CONSTRUCTION BEGAN IN 1959, AND THE GRAND OPENING OF THE MEMORIAL TOOK PLACE ON OCTOBER 15, 1967.

ITS HEIGHT IS 85 METERS WITH A SWORD, THE TOTAL WEIGHT IS MORE THAN 8 THOUSAND TONS. THE STATUE OF THE MOTHERLAND ENTERED THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS AS THE TALLEST SCULPTURE-STATUE IN THE WORLD AT THAT TIME.

The image of the motherland as a woman accompanies the entire history of Russia. Back in the 18th century, after the end of the Seven Years' War, Peter III wanted to install a Triumphal Arch on Nevsky Prospekt with a female figure that would represent Russia.
Soviet propaganda personified the image of the Motherland with the most native person - the mother. Those who defended their native land were its sons, and the invaders were its enemies. The monument "Motherland Calls" is a middle-aged Russian woman, in simple clothes and a belligerent expression on the face.
Vucetich's idea originated from the image of the goddess of victory Nika in ancient history. Another prototype that influenced the monument was the French "Marseillaise". This is the image of the symbol of the republic and revolutionary France. "La Marseillaise" is depicted on the bas-relief of the Arc de Triomphe in the form of a brave woman, with a sword in her hand and an expression of appeal on her face.

The statue of “the Motherland calls” on Mamayev Kurgan remains the main attraction and pride of the city of Volgograd and the whole Russia. Despite the fact that it is no longer the tallest statue in the world, it has not lost its greatness for the people. More than one generation of Russians and guests of the country will be able to come to the statue of the Motherland in Volgograd to express gratitude to the Defenders of the Motherland, in whose honor the Motherland raises its sword to heaven!
