Clauses

Group of words that contain a subject and a predicate.

Independent Clause

Are like adults- they can go out by themselves anytime they like.

Definition: A group of words that contains a subject and a predicate and can stand alone as one complete thought.

Synonyms: simple sentence; main clause

Dependent Clause

Are like children. They can’t go out alone unless an adult (independent clause) goes with them.

Definition: A group of words that has a subject and a predicate but cannot stand alone as a complete thought. If it begins a sentence, it is separated by a comma.

Synonym: fragment
