ISAC Participation 2012-2022

Space Apps wasn’t always the largest annual global hackathon in the world.

The first Space Apps in 2012 was attended by approximately 2,000 people at 25 events in 17 countries. Since then, the program has grown rapidly in numbers, breadth, and depth. Take a look at the chart below to see how the number of participants, number of events, and number of countries hosting events has climbed steadily over the past decade!

These statistics reached new heights in 2020, during the pandemic, with the addition of the Space Apps COVID-19 Challenge event to the yearly Space Apps 2020, culminating in a grand total of over 40,000 participants engaged and 250+ “local virtual” events run by Local Leads in 87 countries!

In this unprecedented time, the Space Apps community exists as a reminder that we have the tools and talents to tackle the challenges that face our planet, as well as the ability to unite across boundaries and borders of all kinds.

You must attend - ISAC Boston online opening event at 10/7 9:00AM EDT AND ISAC Boston online local presentation & judging event on 10/8 12:00PM EDT.

Past Projects From ISAC Boston

2022 ISAC Boston Local Winner

ISAC Global Winner

(Art and technology category)

Team Earth, Wind and Flare

Team Earth, Wind and Flare developed an interactive tool to represent data from the Parker Solar Probe to enable us to learn more about solar effects (aka space weather). The team’s submission, “Where you can Uncover the Invisible”, was an Internet of Things (IoT) device that publicizes space weather and its impacts on the Earth in an interactive and artistic way. They considered key elements for the device including a matrix board to display space and Earth weather, how to integrate data from multiple sources, and what visual and acoustic effects would be the most engaging.

Team Jimmy in the box is WOW-ed by how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) uses origami-like folding and unfolding for its launch and deployment. Using our diverse skills and experience, this project builds computerized origami models for JWST in order to showcase its amazing design and "satisfying" deployment steps.
