About the Powwow at Edmonds College

In this time of COVID-19, Edmonds College is proud to host our 35th Annual Powwow, for the first time virtually. The powwow brings together students, families, and communities to celebrate American Indian singing, drumming, dancing, and arts and crafts.

Powwows are social gatherings - open to all people - celebrating American Indian tribes' traditions, styles of dance, songs, families, and friendships. Dancers and drummers come to the college's powwow from tribes throughout the Northwest and United States.

Students are invited to participate in this Powwow 101 companion project and other cultural activities throughout the year in support of local tribes and tribal members.

Project Purpose, Objective, & Outcome

Purpose: To provide an inclusive learning opportunity to engage in the Digital Powwow programming experience

Learning Objective: To introduce the meaning and presence of powwow through participation, workshops, and to understand another local population of our community.

Learning Outcome: Due to the pandemic, we will not have an on-campus powwow and would like to give our students the ability to experience, support, and participate in this year’s virtual powwow. The purpose of this engagement opportunity is to provide our students with:

  • An inclusive learning opportunity and virtual presence in order to engage in the powwow experience
  • An opportunity to learn more about our indigeneous communities
  • The ability to seek a deeper understanding of what a powwow is and its cultural significance
  • An opportunity to reflect on their powwow experience and share what they learned

Powwow Service - Learning Project Instructions

  1. Please read this entire presentation (slide deck). This presentation will provide all required materials, links to virtual programs, and supporting materials for participation, reflection, and service.
  2. Fill out the Powwow 101 Survey and Photo, Audio, and Video Promotion Release Form
  3. Visit the Edmonds College Powwow website for information about all the digital powwow programming including live streams, videos, vendors and the virtual market.
  4. Attend the Powwow 101 program on either dates listed on Slide 6. Your attendance is required to complete the Powwow 101 Service-Learning Companion Reflection Statement.
  5. Visit the Action of Service Submission slide and choose the submission option for your individual project. This is to be completed and submitted to Simone Tanke no later than June 6th, 2021.
  6. Explore the resources slide for important links where you can learn more about the program websites, our continued partnerships and other opportunities to engage in the powwow.
  7. Fill out the Powwow 101 Service-Learning Companion Reflection Statement to wrap up your service-learning project.

Action of Service & Reflection

Your Action of Service includes your participation in the digital Powwow 101 program, completed reflection statement, and your project submission. Your contribution may be shared with our EC community, outside partners or presenters, and you will be acknowledged in these shared opportunities*.

Submission Options:

    • Create a Land Acknowledgement that you might give in your life! Please see our Edmonds College Land Acknowledgement Resources guide for instructions.
    • Attend the Artist Talk on Thursday, May 6th from 12- 2 p.m., and then create your own piece of artwork - drawing, painting, photography, your choice! An image or the physical piece can be submitted to Simone Tanke
    • Write a written reflection. Example: What were some of your most powerful learning moments and what made them so?
