This introductory unit is an overview of ratios and real world examples that we see daily. The main focus being using the correct ratio language and how to make equivalent ratios. Our next topic is a continuation, “Unit Rates and Percentages”. Here students will find the power of finding “how much for one” and will extend that certain ratios are known as percentages. Students will learn how to find 1%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of various situations.

This month, our 8th grade ELA class is diving into Module 2 of the EL curriculum, which centers on studying William Shakespeare’s classic play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Our objectives include helping students analyze complex language, understand character motivations, and make connections between the play’s themes and modern experiences. By examining Shakespeare’s craft and the play’s timeless ideas, students will gain skills in interpreting literature and expressing their insights in discussions and written responses. This study of A Midsummer Night's Dream is an exciting opportunity for students to engage with a classic text in meaningful ways.

In Unit 6 the Industrialism and the Progressive Era unit, students will examine the transformative changes in American society and the economy during the late 1800s and early 1900s, focusing on how technology and innovation impacted the working class. While some prospered, the costs to workers raise questions. This unit encourages comparisons to today's issues, such as economic structures, modern monopolies, and the role and treatment of immigrants in the workforce.

We will focus on answering the following questions

  1. How did innovation and new technologies transform North Carolina and impact the broader nation?
  2. How were discrimination and oppression in North Carolina and across the nation confronted or resisted?
  3. What conflicts emerged due to industrialization, and how successful were efforts at reform?

Finishing Unit 2 on

  • How to dilate a shape - using a scale factor to change the side lengths of a shape to make it bigger or smaller
  • Determining if two figures are congruent or similar - Congruent shapes are exactly alike nothing is different about them and they can use a transformation to get from one to the other. Similar figures have proportional side lengths and have to be the same shape and have the same angles.
  • Introducing slope - the quotient of the change in distance from the y values and the change in distance from the x values

Starting Unit 3 on

  • Proportional Relationships - being about to use the same pattern to get from one to the other
  • Linear Relationships - constant change between two different things
  • Slope - the quotient of the change in distance from the y values and the change in distance from the x values

For extra skill practice please have your child log on to IXL through Wake Portal and work on practice assignments.

2nd Quarter is rocking and rolling! We have a group project to start our year that is made to challenge our students teamwork and ability to combine their ideas. Students will be individually building on their visual knowledge and descriptive language on canvas in several reading assignments. For week 1, please be sure to sign your students class contract that will be sent home and have them bring a 1-subject lined notebook to class.

nhartman2@wcpss.net

There are no major changes for our Band students with the arrival of Quarter 2. All of our classes will continue learning and growing on their specific instruments. I have been extremely impressed with how much our students have learned in Quarter 1, but please remind your young musician to practice their instrument at home… With so many performances on the horizon, it is imperative that each and every student contributes their best!

Orlandus Perry

Chorus, Orchestra, PianoWebsite

goperry@wpcss.net

In quarter 2, orchestra classes will continue to grow in skill development and mastery of standards. The intermediate and advanced orchestra are set to participate in this year’s Candy Cane Lane in downtown Zebulon on Nov. 23.

The letter for this event has been sent out and I will send it again for a reminder.

We are excited to begin our piano class for 6th grade this quarter. Piano students will need to bring headphones or earbuds with wire. A recommended piano book is Alfred's Basic Piano Course Lesson Book Level 1A. It can be purchased on Amazon for only $9.89. This is recommended so students can write in their own books and be able to review and practice at home if they have a keyboard/piano. Keyboards are provided in class. We are wishing everyone a great quarter 2.

Stephen “Ken” JonesActing and Theater Tech

2nd quarter is off to a great start. Students in all theatre classes will be building trust and creating a warm inviting environment by completing team building and Icebreaker activities. Students will start their 1 st project soon. The All About Me Project. Please be sure to sign your students' class contract and technical theatre permission form. These will be sent home week 1 but can also be found on canvas. Come out and support advanced dramatics in their 1st production. “The Day The Internet Died” Tickets can be purchased using the Link below

Welcome to Q2! This quarter I will be teaching Spanish Heritage, Exploratory Language, Spanish Beginning Less than 1 Year (7th grade class), and Spanish Beginning 1 Year (8th grade class). To start a successful quarter, it is important that students come to school prepared with their computers, chargers, pencils, and notebooks to take notes in class. Notes are important because they help consolidate the topics and organize the information in a comprehensible way, and be consulted when necessary. Taking notes is a way to engage with the subject matter and pay attention to what is being said in class. Thank you for all of your support in ensuring that your child come ready to learn and work in class!
