2020 Working group discussions

  • Learning to hunt as a pack
    • How could CS departments collaborate more? Some disciplines do this very effectively. Would it benefit our community, and what concrete things could we try?
  • CoE Strategic plan
    • Rather than waiting for the next CoE call, can we work up proposals in advance? What would they be?
  • Engaging with industry
    • CS industry engagement tends to be piecemeal and isolated. Is there a more effective way the sector could engage with industry as a collective?
  • Leveraging Linkage Infrastructure grants
    • Are there opportunities to work together on national proposals (ARC LIEF and/or MBIE) to benefit our researchers? Do we have all the equipment we want and need?

Special Motion to incorporate

  • An unincorporated association
    • is one type of organisational structure for a charity.
    • not a separate legal entity from its members.
    • cannot enter into contracts in its own name, or own land, or employ people, or sue or be sued.
    • The members of the unincorporated association do these things on behalf of the association.
  • The members may each have individual legal liability for the association’s debts and defaults, something which can lead to legal risk for those members.
  • Has served us well, and certainly comes with a minimal set of obligations.
    • However, recently as part of our ongoing journal ranking exercises we needed to sign a contract for accessing data from a publisher.

Incorporation

  • There are more than 38,000 incorporated associations in Victoria.
  • They are clubs or community groups, operating not-for-profit, whose members have decided to give their organisation a formal legal structure.
  • You can recognise an incorporated association by the word ‘Incorporated’ or the abbreviation ‘Inc.’ after its name.
  • When a club or community group incorporates, it becomes a ‘legal person’ – that is, a legal entity that stays the same even if its members change. It can enter into contracts in its own name; for example, to borrow money or buy equipment.
  • This protects the individual members of the association from legal liabilities
