What is phonics?

Сhildren are taught how to:

  • Recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;
  • Identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make – such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’ and
  • Blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.

🡪 Children can then use this knowledge to ‘decode’ new words that they hear or see.

High frequency and tricky words

  • high frequency words are not segmented but taught as whole words, recognised on sight
  • E.g: was, you, her, they, are, all, the, little, said, there, when, what, have, like

Метод целых слов (Look and Say)

  • детей обучают узнавать слова как целые единицы;
  • oбучение строится по принципу визуального распознавания целых слов, без разделения их на буквы и слоги;
  • обязательное использование наглядности: картинок или предметов.

Алфавитный метод

  • обучающиеся знакомятся с английскими буквами и их названиями и звуками, которые эти буквы обозначают;
  • транскрипция не учит читать, она нужна только для «схематического» изображения произношения слова;
  • изучение правил чтения;
  • применение правил чтения в аналогичных словах.

  • explain that today students will be learning a new letter Uu and name several words with that letter in them.
  • explain that in some words this letter can be pronounced as [ᴧ] and ask students to repeat the sound after them.
  • pronounce several words (cup, cat, plate, umbrella, fridge, toy, cupcake, phone, plant, mum, bubble gum, apple, under) and ask students to repeat only the words with sound [ᴧ].

  • give students an opportunity to work in pairs (small groups) and come up with the same words using letter cards;
  • ask students to read out non-CVC words and collocations with sound [ᴧ] (e.g. uncle, upset, umbrella)

  • show students pictures of words that start with letter Uu (sound [ju:]) and ask students to name those/repeat them after you.
