Read, Read, Read:

  • Read with your child in a new way. This could be articles, websites, current event publications, etc.
  • Encourage your child to read different genres independently, including informational.
  • After reading, ask your child to write about what they read. Then discuss.

*Your child can keep track of their after school activities and/or routine with a planner/

calendar.

Help your child become an independent learner.

*Ask your child to hold their questions for a later time. Rather than sprinkling you with questions throughout the day, encourage your child to do everything they can do on their own first. Then come to you with whatever questions they have. Start with chunks of the day. They could also write their questions in a notebook.

*You and your child can make a list of goals they should be able to achieve on their own. Doing this together provides an opportunity to help them realize how much they’re capable of without you.
