November 13th-17th

Happy November! We are in full swing in each of our core subjects. We are continuing our Science unit on the sun, moon and stars. We are finishing up topic 4 for math which students will practice different strategies to add and subtract within 20. We have also started Unit 2 for our module lessons. In this unit students will be taking a closer look and learning about the sun, moon and stars.

Student Council will be hosting our Can Food Drive, November 13th – November 16th. First grade is in charge of sending in macaroni and cheese, pasta/noodles.

This month, Student Council will be organizing a Schoolwide Attendance Challenge. They will be monitoring attendance the week of November 27th – December 1st. We understand that student maybe absence due to illness, doctors’ appointment, and/or other excused days. The goal is to reduce the number of unexcused absences. We will be tallying those unexcused absence for each grade. The grade level with the most students attending school will receive an extra 15 minutes of recess!

1st grade will be attending a field trip to the Schiele Museum on December 8th. We are in need of three chaperones for this outing. Please email me this week if you are interested in being a chaperone. I will put all of the volunteer names in the wheel of names and spin it next week to pick our chaperones. You must be registered as a CMS volunteer to attend.

This Week in First Grade

Literacy: Students will complete the book Summer Sun Risin. We will then introduce the story Papa, please get the moon for me by Eric Carle. We will explore and identify story elements while being introduced to the phases of the moon.

Math: Students will complete their Topic 4 assessment and solve the unknown in addition and subtraction problems.

Skills: Students will identify and properly use the wh digraph and /K/ spelled ck at the end of a word.

Science: We will explain our knowledge of the day sky and sun patterns.
