The Equestrian Canada Statement of Principle

EQUESTRIAN CANADA STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES – HORSE WELFARE

  1. Equestrian Canada (EC) is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all participants that is free from Abuse. The purpose of this Policy is to stress the importance of that commitment by educating Individuals and the public about Horse Abuse, outlining how EC will work to prevent Horse Abuse, and how such Abuse or suspected Abuse can be reported to and addressed by EC.

  • EC requires that all Individuals adhere to this Code of Conduct and acknowledge and accept that the welfare of the Horse must always be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.

  • Section A Horse Welfare rules apply to all disciplines and all Section Rule Books. Rule exceptions in other Sections that contravene Section A Horse Welfare rules are not permitted and will not be approved.

  • EC is committed to:

a. recognizing Horses as sentient beings, defined by the ability to feel, perceive or experience subjectively. (ie. the animal is not only capable of feeling pain and distress but also can have positive psychological experiences, such as comfort, pleasure or interest that are appropriate to its species, environment and circumstances). To state that animals are sentient accepts that they can experience positive and negative emotions.

b. upholding the welfare of the Horse, regardless of value and performance level, as the primary priority regardless of competitive commitments, expectations, or commercial influences;

c. requiring the Horse to be treated with the highest level of care, compassion, respect, and empathy;

d.requiring that no Horse be subjected to Abuse (ref: Rules of Equestrian Canada, Section A General Regulations, Article A517) or Distress;

e. ensuring that all Individuals accept and implement, at a minimum, the requirements within the National Farm Animal Care Council Equine Code of Practice;

f. ongoing support for scientific studies of animal-based indicators of pain, distress, and/or compromised welfare;

g. increasing education and awareness for the evolution of best management and equine husbandry practices

h. requiring Individuals to know and follow the EC rules and implement industry regulations in all competitions; and,

i. reviewing, revising, and developing competition rules and regulations that protect the welfare of the horse.

RISING STARS EQUITATION PROGRAM - OVERVIEW

Rising Stars Equitation Program – What You Need to Know

The Rising Stars Equitation Program is a national youth dressage initiative designed to help riders improve their equitation, gain confidence in the show ring, and compete in a fun, fair environment. It is open to all riders up to age 25.

Who Can Participate?

  • Any rider 25 or under (as of the end of the calendar year).
  • Amateurs 18+ may enter separate amateur Rising Stars classes.
  • Horses/ponies of any sanctioning level may be used

Competition Groupings

Riders compete in one of two groups:

Foundation Level

  • Introductory
  • Training
  • First
  • Second

Progressive Level

  • Third
  • Fourth
  • FEI

How Judging Works

  • Every Rising Stars class uses two judges (during the same test):
  • Technical Judge – scores your dressage test normally.
  • Equitation Judge – scores your position, seat, and effectiveness of aids using the Rising Stars score sheet.
  • Your technical score counts for regular class placings.Your equitation score is used for Rising Stars awards.

How to Qualify for Championships

  • Score 60% or higher on your equitation score.
  • You’ll qualify for one of two championships:
  • Foundation Championship Ride-Off (Intro–Second)  ***AA has separate class
  • Progressive Championship Ride-Off  (Third–FEI) ***AA has separate class

Ride-Off Format

  • Group class is judged only on equitation.
  • Riders may be asked to perform simple patterns.
  • Champions and Reserves are awarded in each level.
  • If a Ride-Off cannot be held, Champions are chosen by the highest equitation scores.

About Angelstone Tournaments

The Venue

The Angelstone Tournaments Venue is located near the tranquil village of Rockwood, Ontario, located less than a half hour’s drive northwest of Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Our visitors from the United States can reach the venue through the Buffalo, Detroit and Watertown border crossings.

Since 2010, the venue has grown to become one of North America’s premier Equestrian Show Jumping Tournament sites and is now home to the Caledon Dressage series. Each passing year brings new additions to the property and in 2013, we expanded our All Weather footing in multiple rings, featured in our Main Stadium, ESI Hunter ring, Astalos ring and 3 warm-up rings. A total of 5 competition rings that stand up to both rainstorms and drought conditions means that horses competing at the venue can be guaranteed perfect footing regardless of the seasonal weather.

Expanding our services this year will also mean the introduction of all new stabling for 1000 horses, a new campground for those competitors with trailers who prefer to live on-site during the Tournament.

Spectators and sponsors will appreciate the attention to detail prevalent throughout the venue’s hospitality zones, including décor from award winning designers. The view of the action is second to none. There is no better venue to take in the action of the sport while surrounded by an elite level of personal service and amenities.

We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you to the venue.
