2025 Poquonock Paraeducator of the Year
Congratulations to Danielle Franklin for being named the
2025 Poquonock Paraeducator of the Year!
Grade 1
In unit 2 of science, students are exploring light and sound. They are determining what makes sound and exploring how sound helps them communicate. They are also experimenting with/without light to see how light affects their ability to communicate. Students have gone on a listening walk to pay close attention to the sounds they hear around them in everyday life and have created shadow puppets to use with flashlights. You can have a conversation with your child about light and sound when they bring their completed science journal home.
In reading, students have been working on identifying who is telling the story. They are using text evidence such as pronouns to identify if the character or narrator is telling the story.
In writing, students have been learning about the purpose of opinion writing. Their opinion piece is based on something they would like changed in school. The students had to state their opinion and give three reasons that support their opinion.
In the Bookworms classrooms, students are exploring types of fiction by reading multiple books by the same author. They are increasing reading and writing stamina by working on longer books and lengthier writing assignments. Students are writing short summaries of stories by focusing on what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story as well as writing questions and predictions.
You can continue to support your child at home by reviewing high frequency words, listening to your child read and doing math facts. Students would also benefit from learning how to correctly spell the list 1 high frequency words.
Celebrating Black History Month with a read aloud featuring the book ABC Black History and Me written by Queenbe Monyei. This book presents 26 critical historical concepts, events, and people—from A to Z—in Black American history. Read to learn and get inspired.
