Application strategies

Incorporate into your phonics lessons using decodable texts

  • Reread the text up to four times. Set a different purpose for each reading.

  • Do a written retell, using as many of the words with the feature being practiced as possible.

  • Reread the retell on subsequent days and add to it.

Text Types and Their Relation to Efficacy in Beginning Reading Interventions

  • Analyzed results of 119 studies
  • Interventions used a combination of decodable texts, other texts, and/or no texts (word reading only) for application and practice
