The intentional year long process of creation of a social justice commitment was not to simply check a box. The vision and purpose of this commitment is that it will be living and actionable throughout many elements and levels of college planning, policy development, program review & professional development & learning. For example, A question will be added to Program Review for both Departmental and Committee/Shared Governance groups asking to explicitly explain plan for addressing the City College Social Justice Commitment and create their Social Justice Action plan. The commitment will be utilized throughout recruitment and in hiring to ensure that candidates understand the priority and explicit commitment to social justice as they are considering City College for employment to recruit and attract highly qualified equity minded practitioners. There is also an intention and expectation that the commitment will be used by individuals to self-reflect and develop their own personal social justice action plans. The purpose is also that this commitment will be living and evolving. It is not intended to be static but that it will be something that will be reviewed and revised by the College periodically through the City College Equity & Diversity Committee (Official name TBD) to ensure it remains relevant in addressing the equity gaps and social justice needs of the campus community.

Realignment & Merge to New Diversity & Equity Committee

This effort began at the beginning of April 2021 and was led by Vice-president Denise Whisenhunt and Susan Murray. Originally it was separate committee created through shared governance groups, as of Spring 2022 committee merged other committees to be the new City College Equity & Diversity Committee (official name TBD). The charge & responsibilities has evolved as throughout the process. Started off with identifying a process for engaging campus community into conversation through research and evaluation of other colleges work and process, then moved into solidifying structural framework and context to actually writing the draft and obtaining input and feedback to revise.

There have been forum and workshops over the span of the last year that have helped inform and shape the process, context and structure of the social justice statement. We held ones that were open to whole campus community and most recently a feedback session of the first read explicitly for students. We had over 120 student attend and engage with us!
