Why Focus on MSIs?

  • Lower than needed participation by MSI faculty and students in large research facilities

  • Insufficient budgets on most campuses for investing in large research infrastructures

  • Desire by many MSI researchers to develop multi-institutional teams, including those from national labs, other MSIs, and other major research universities that can compete effectively for large research funding

  • Need to develop research programs that would make it attractive for any research university to form collaborations with them

Activities for Achieving Goal

  • Faciliting collaborations through
    • Deciding upon focused research themes
    • Sponsoring workshops around focused research themes and infrastructures
    • Utilizing funding opportunities

  • Developing courses on accelerator sciences for MSIs, as well as the wider national and international STEM communities 

  • Tackling educational and research issues pertinent to MSIs.

Achievements

    • Hosted a number of successful workshops, both on-site and virtual.
    • Generated a number of new faculty and student users at the national lab facilities.
    • Assisted faculty with securing funding.
    • Gained national and international visibility.
    • Developed strong partnerships with BNL, ANL, LBNL, SLAC, and Cornell.
