Audience

  • Refer to the audience deliberately - at the start, throughout and the end.
  • Remember that is this format, the second person (you, we, our) is a way of getting the audience interested.
  • The age/status of the audience will define your tone.

Use one of these in each paragraph:

  • “I am sure we all agree that…”
  • “Are you all aware?”
  • “Surely ladies and gentlemen no one believes?”

  • Do not use filler - um, oh, etc.
  • Brief welcome
  • Outline topic
  • One key point in each paragraph with connectives
  • End with something memorable

Structure

  1. Open with a welcome to your audience. This will be brief and simple.
  2. Outline the subject of the speech.
  3. Mark three or four key points (one for each paragraph, 5-6 sentences) to support your argument.
  4. Sum up your argument and acknowledge your audience.
