Our current activities

Central Park gardens created or maintained by SMAS volunteers

    • The Rose Garden
    • The Hummingbird-Butterfly Garden filled with California native plants that attract pollinators
    • The Victorian Garden that surrounds the Kohl Pumphouse
    • The Sundial Garden at the park entrance at 9th and Palm Avenues
    • The Mayor John Condon Fern Garden
    • Throughout the park, SMAS periodically adds plants and shrubs such as azalea, iris, rhododendron, amaryllis. We installed many CA natives just south of the great lawn.

SMAS makes significant cash donations each year to the City to support Central Park special projects.

Kohl Pumphouse. We recently completed an extensive remodel of the pumphouse interior thanks to a generous donation from Joan Bradley.

Education. SMAS hosts a seminar or workshop on the first Sunday each month on a variety of topics on gardening and horticulture. They are recorded and are available on our website or YouTube channel. We host the Master Gardeners of San Mateo and San Francisco on the first Sunday of each month to answer your gardening questions.

Nursery. Our nursery is open for plant sales on weekends. It is sometimes described as the best kept secret in San Mateo. Everything we sell is either donated or propagated by our volunteers. We recycle. Bring us your unwanted plants, pots or other garden items.

Rentals. The Kohl Pumphouse can be rented for private events such as birthdays, showers or work meetings.

How does this all happen - collaboration of SMAS with countless partners, donors and the San Mateo Parks Department, along with thousands of volunteer hours.
