Centrifugal Pumps

  • A pump is a hydraulic machine which converts the mechanical energy into hydraulic energy.
  • This hydraulic energy is in the form of pressure energy.
  • If mechanical energy converted into pressure energy is because of centrifugal action then pump is referred ‘Centrifugal Pump’.
  • For centrifugal pump the flow is in radial outward direction.
  • It works on the principle of vortex flow which means that when certain mass of liquid is rotated , the rise in pressure of the rotating liquid takes place.
  • The basic difference in turbine and pump is, in turbine the flow takes from the high pressure side to low pressure side whereas in pump flow takes place from low pressure side to high pressure side.
  • in turbine the flow is accelerated whereas in pump the flow is decelerated.

  • Advantages of Centrifugal Pump
  • Discharge capacity is higher than other pumps.
  • The performance characteristics are superior.
  • Can be coupled directly prime mover.
  • Can be operated at very high speeds.
  • Compact and small in size.
  • It has low cost.
  • Installation and maintenance are easier and cheaper.

  • Applications of Centrifugal Pump
  • In steam and diesel power plant to circulate feed water and cooling water.
  • For pumping of water in building.
  • To pump water from source to field for agriculture and irrigation purposes.
  • To pump cooling water to large refrigeration and air-conditioning plant.
  • For lifting viscous liquids like paper pulp, muddy and sewage water, oil etc.
  • To pump water in fire trucks.
  • Chemical and process industries.
