        • Only one district per form.
        • Printout a map of the district boundary lines in your area!
    • Legal City/County Sorting = District 3 includes part of City of Richmond and part of Henrico County. A voter registered to vote in City of Richmond signs a different petition form than a voter registered in Henrico County.
        • Only one city or county per form.
        • Familiarize yourself with your area’s legal cities & counties

A Word about SSNs:

  • In past years, this was required.
    • It is now OPTIONAL.
    • HOWEVER: We still recommend it.

WHY? >> Signatures are verified by SSN__

Without it: Verification at VA SEB is dependent on correctly written, read, & typed names.

NOTARIZED AFFIDAVIT:

  • As “witness”, you must sign the affidavit in presence of a notary
    • Most banks, post offices, UPS, FedEx have notaries
    • Try your bank first! Many have notary services that are complementary for their customers (BoA, Wells Fargo, etc)
    • Find notaries in your area: asnnotary.org
  • Fee: per visit vs per page
    • Is anyone a notary? Or know a notary?
    • Maybe one who is a Bernie supporter?
    • Send contacts: virginia4bernie@gmail.com

Common Mistakes:

  • Signs on incorrect district form
  • Sloppy handwriting
  • Not registered at address
  • Not registered yet

These signatures will be thrown out.

AIM: Minimize these mistakes

OUR Statewide Goals:

  • 10,000 signatures
      • 400 per district
  • Reach district-wide goals by Oct 1
  • Teams formed by city, county, or district
  • Collected at summer outdoor events (i.e. county fairs, festivals, farmer’s markets)

REMEMBER: 3 KEY QUESTIONS

(1) Are they registered to vote in Virginia?

(2) What congressional district are they registered to vote in?

(3) What city/county are they registered to vote in?

After a voter signs? VERIFY!

  • Before a voter walks away, check:
    • Have they signed their name?
    • Have they printed their name legibly?
    • Have they included a street address with their city/town?
    • Have they written today’s date?
    • If no SSN, can you read their street address?
  • Are they super excited about Bernie?
    • Ask them to sign your volunteer signup form!

FAQ or Comments:

  • “Who’s Bernie?”
  • “Isn’t he a socialist?”
  • “Why are you doing this?”
  • “I don’t know who I’m voting for.”
  • “I’m not voting for him.”
  • “I’m a Republican.”
  • “I’m for Hillary.”

PREPARE your reaction!

#VA4Bernie Volunteer Guidelines:

  • Are you disgusted with today’s politicians?

Conversation Diffusers (Sample)

  • State a value or belief that matters to you and connect that to Bernie’s campaign
    • “I believe there is too much money in politics, and I’m inspired by Bernie’s 30-year commitment to choosing people over $$”
  • Ask what issues matter most to them
