OUR STORY

About us: In Chamonix, back in 2013, a group of friends who worked from home started to use each others’ apartments as an office. It was a great way to help each other with various problems and to get to know new coworkers, even though from a different company.

The meetups continued until the autumn of 2014, when an opportunity to create a coworking space appeared just 100m from the main ski lift in the centre of Chamonix. The space was an old radio station called Summit Radio and it got turned into the Alps’ first official coworking space.

The Ski Locker had its grand opening during the summer of 2015. We have since gathered a growing number of interesting coworkers from all over the world, expanding to a larger space in 2016. The thing that brings Ski Locker members together is that we’re all making work fit life.

Our company: Ski Locker (France) SAS

Our address: 18 Place Edmond Desailloud, Chamonix-Mont Blanc, 74400 France

Contact: Chris@theskilocker.com; Patrik@theskilocker.com

The Ski Locker is not only a coworking space. It is a statement. A feeling. A way to challenge the status quo.

As a community we challenge the way we work. In everything we do. We make work fit life.

2.3 GETTING STARTED

There are few practical things that are important when joining us. Please have a read through and feel free to ask questions if we are missing something.

WhatsApp - We use a communications software called WhatsApp. It is a great way to ask questions and stay up to date in the community. There is a QR code by the entrance/kitchen.

Kitchen - Treat the kitchen as your own, it is as simple as that. If it’s dirty, clean it. If the dishwasher is full, take the dishes out.

Printer - We have a HP-printer, copier & scanner. You can print from your phone, usb, email or computer. Just search for The Ski Locker Printer when you’re on the wifi. You can also email documents to the printer at the email above the printer. If you need them, download the drivers from here.

Door access - After you have paid your membership fee, you can get an access card from Patrik.

Wifi - The wifi login is the account email & password that you signed up with and only works if you have an active membership/day pass.

Read membership T&C - Reading and agreeing to our T&Cs is very important. By accepting the payment, you confirm that it is read. The T&Cs start on slide 20 of this document.

Meeting room - We have a meeting room at the Ski Locker and on some days it is very popular. You book the meeting room by using our membership software and the same log in you used to set up membership. If the meeting room is booked, members can use the kitchen or phone booth and on nice days, have a meeting on a picnic bench outside. If you have a phone call or meeting lasting longer than 10-15 minutes, please do use the meeting spaces so as not to disturb other members.

THE SPACE

2.4 GETTING STARTED

Working from a coworking space is very different from a traditional business centre. Essentially, we are like a big tribe that takes care of each other both on a professional and personal level. e.g. If you make a coffee/tea for yourself, ask if someone else want one too :)

First day at the Ski Locker

By now, you have signed up for WhatsApp and introduced yourself online. Don’t be a stranger and say hi to the other members, we won't bite!

Sharing a space together

We share this office space together and it is important that we respect that. If you make/see a mess, please clean it. Use WhatsApp to contact Patrik if you or someone else breaks something. Then we can easily fix it. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that. At the Ski Locker, we take responsibility for the space as a collective, not as individuals.

Send us a message over WhatsApp, Let's grab a coffee. We are always available for feedback.

Create events - The Ski Locker members want to have many fun events and they can be created by you. Ask the community over WhatsApp for help and check for available dates.

Shape the culture - The major reason why members stay at the Ski Locker is for the community. It is important that we take care and nurture that. Join the breakfast meetings and think about how you act towards others.

Improve the space - If you have an idea on how to improve the space, share it! There are no excuses to keep valuable insights and ideas inside you. Let's explore the idea together and make it happen if the community agrees.

The Ski Locker Member Agreement - last updated 30 September 2017

This agreement covers the relationship between you and The Ski Locker (France) SAS (we’ll refer to ourselves as “the Ski Locker”, “we” or “us”) and covers your membership of the Ski Locker community and your use of the coworking spaces operated by us at 18 Place Edmond Desailloud, Chamonix Mont-Blanc, 74400, France.

The agreement starts from the date on which you become a member of the Ski Locker by accepting these terms and paying your first membership fee, and continues until the date your membership ends (for whatever reason). We’re not a serviced or fully staffed office, and the following things help us keep our prices accessible.

4.1 POLICIES - MEMBER GUIDELINES

22 of 44

The Ski Locker isn’t your average working environment. This isn’t your everyday membership agreement. We’re people with a purpose. We’re making Work fit Life.

We aren’t big on rules per se, but we have figured out that not everyone inherently understands being a good coworker, and our accountant says we have to mention that we charge VAT etc. How to be a good coworker:

  • BE yearning for interaction.
  • BE willing to introduce yourself and make friends.
  • BE ready to participate in impromptu and planned events.
  • BE eager to help everyone feel proud of our space and the people in it.
  • BE prepared for abundance.

4.1 POLICIES - MEMBER GUIDELINES

POLICIES

23 of 44

Key things you need to know:

  • If you’re a Full Time Member, you get your own desk and can leave your monitor, keyboard, favorite teddy bear etc. For any other membership plan, please sit in a Get Flexible space and clear your desk at the end of each day, or if you leave for longer than 30 mins.
  • Clean up your garbage/trash/rubbish/bits of paper/coffee cups/smelly ski socks, put used dishes into the dishwasher, keep the space tidy for everyone and recycle.
  • No illegal bittorrent (don’t bog down the network downloading films all day)
  • Coworking is an extreme sport. Don’t sue us if you break a blood vessel in your forehead dealing with your Windows blue screen issues.
  • If you are being bothered by the working habits of another member please talk to him/her in order to find a solution. Sometimes it’s a quick easy fix.
  • Don’t be a dick, simply be a nice person.

4.1 POLICIES - MEMBER GUIDELINES

POLICIES

24 of 44

  • Please pay us on time. Invoices are issued monthly.
  • We are super pet friendly but clean up after your pet, don’t allow them on the furniture (bean bags, sofas etc) and bring your own water and food dishes.
  • Violators of our guidelines may be forced to wear suits and ties, high heels or just asked to leave. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. If you’re asked to leave, you need to skedaddle.
  • If something needs fixing or replacing at the space, if you can’t lock the door or you need to know how to work the printer, ask for help on WhatsApp. For anything else, ask Petter, Nicola, Chris or Patrik. They are available on WhatsApp most hours of the day.
  • We value your feedback, so if we’re not meeting your expectations, let us know asap!

4.1 POLICIES - MEMBER GUIDELINES

POLICIES

25 of 44

In order to keep things ticking along nicely and our prices accessible, here are some essentials we ask everyone to be mindful of when using the space.

  • Participation is an extreme sport. You break or lose it, you replace it.
  • Bring problems with plumbing, electrical, door access, flooding, broken lockboxes, natural disasters, dishwashers, toilet paper etc. to the attention of Snostation reception (or to Nicola, Petter, Chris or Patrik if no one is around).
  • Never give out Ski Locker door codes to anyone. They are updated regularly and are only sent to fully paid up members.
  • Learn how to reset the Ski Locker routers and use this as a first defense against an internet outage.
  • Pay your membership fees for the month ahead. We hate having to chase you down.
  • Engage in meaningful greetings. Pop in and out of all areas and offices to connect with one another.

4.2 POLICIES - YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

POLICIES

26 of 44

  • Equipment and professional liability is your own responsibility (our insurance can’t cover it).
  • Cleaning up after yourself, washing your dishes and tidying up is everyone’s responsibility. We work together to maintain a space we feel proud of.
  • Leave the spaces as you found them, or in better shape.
  • No sleeping at the Ski Locker. If you’re tired, go home and get some rest.
  • The Ski Locker is dog-friendly for polite and well-behaved pups only. See the Dog Membership section below.
  • Anyone who behaves in a manner that is destructive to the space or the members may be asked to leave. If anyone in our space makes you feel uncomfortable, bring it to our attention right away.
  • Be responsible and respectful with your internet usage. No bittorrent or illegal activities. Respect other people’s privacy, confidentiality, safety, property and data. If the police come looking for you, we will give you up immediately.

4.2 POLICIES - YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

POLICIES

27 of 44

  • The space is accessible for members from early morning to late but closed during the night (temporary exceptions can be made), but please keep to our reasonable use guidelines of up to a maximum of 12 hours use of the space per day. Anything longer than that and you’re working too hard!
  • If we are hosting an event, are doing some work to improve the space or for any other reason, we reserve the right to restrict access to the space temporarily. In this case, we’ll always try to give you reasonable notice.
  • Back-up your data. If we have a power outage or the internet goes down, we’re not responsible for any work you may lose.
  • Don’t use drugs or drink to excess whilst at the space. Don’t use offensive language or threatening behaviour towards any other member.
  • We don’t have car parking available. There are some free spaces in the alley behind Cham Sud. Or use public transport or cycle. A bike rack is located outside of the building. Don’t leave bikes inside, and especially not leaning against other members’ desks.

4.2 POLICIES - YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

POLICIES

28 of 44

  • Ski Locker members will usually sign for other members’ packages, but it isn’t guaranteed. Plan accordingly.
  • The last member out of each space is responsible for closing windows, shutting off lights and firmly closing and locking all doors.
  • There’s a kitchen provided in the basement and small coffee area in the main space. Please treat the space as you would at home and keep all areas tidy. Put dishes in the dishwasher, turn it off if you see it’s full and empty it if you see it’s ready. The bins are emptied once a week so please take any large items to the main recycling bins in the road behind the building.

5. MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR TIME

40 of 44

There are so many activities and sports to do in Chamonix that it would take you a lifetime to try them all. We have collected a few hints and tips to help you with your social setup. This section will be updated to best meet members needs. If you have a suggestion, let us know!

Accommodation - Finding a place in Chamonix is simple, finding a cheap place to stay is hard. We built ChamSocial.com, Chamonix’s online community. That is the best bet to find a cheap place to stay. If you are looking for short-term accommodation we can offer you a place through Snostation.com. Simply contact them and say that you are a member of the Ski Locker to get a good deal.

Skiing & mountaineering - Chamonix is famous for the Mont Blanc mountain range and what it has to offer. It is an extreme environment with great skiing and climbing. Worth remembering is that a lot of the skiing in Chamonix is “Off-piste”. If you decide to ski in out of bounds area, it is important to have knowledge about avalanche safety e.g. use equipment, reading weather etc. If there is interests from the community, we can host courses for avalanche and glacier/crevasse rescue.
