Māra Kai – Food Gardens�Small group activity

Māra Kai gardens have been an important source of food from the earliest human settlement in Aotearoa New Zealand. Māori and European settlers both brought crops with them. Until recently New Zealand households mostly grew their own food.

Tasks:

  1. In small groups create a mind map or brainstorm on �“How growing your own food reduces greenhouse gases”
  2. Research online what vegetables grow well in your region? �* What season are they planted and harvested? �* Hint: Check the marataka (Māori lunar calendar).

Extension: Research an ‘edible weed’ (non-poisonous) �that grows in your region and find a recipe for it.
