Problem Statement

My project aims to:

  • Do plantation program in ecological sensitive and barren land of Duda Parbat.
  • Solve the problem of soil erosion and encourage agriculture.
  • Create awareness among local people and also solve soil erosion in long run.

Relevance

  • In the long run, problems like poverty, and people may get discouraged towards farming/agricultural activities
  • May increase deforestation
  • May be the reason of climate change in some extent.

Context

  • Due to Environment Degradation (Soil Erosion), the cultivating land was very affected
  • Directly affects at agriculture and discourages farmers towards agriculture
  • Contribution to control the problem of climate change in some extent

Baseline Data

  • In Nepal, 45.5% of land suffers from soil erosion.
  • Around ten millions hectares of forest is deforested every year globally.
  • From 2001 to 2022, Nepal lost 53.4 kha of tree cover.

From my conversations with the community:

  • Every year , approximately 2.25 hectares agricultural land is affected by soil erosion at Duda, Parbat
  • Farmers get a the loss of $1000 every year (compare to annual per capita income of $1.3k)

Approach

Plantation for Community Enhancement

  • Plantation on the barren land by involvement of local people.
  • Create awareness about plantation and encourage afforestation.
  • Maximum of the participants were youths so that it brings positive impact at long run.
  • Why this approach:
    • Involves the community to act on this issue
    • Benefit to the environment + decreasing soil erosion: alternative: building walls

If I had more time, I would

  • Seek the other needy area which need plantation and conduct plantation program
  • Conduct session at school and colleges
  • Involve more people at that project
  • Create a Environment conservation club at village
  • Involve the government directly at afforestation
