The Beauty of Light in Nature
Kyndall Mitchell
Grade 12
AP2D Art AVHS 2018-2019
My Concept
My concentration is based on the beauty of light in nature. The meaning of this is the natural colors that our world produces on its own without man made objects. I love being able to watch as the sun either enters our atmosphere or leaves it, we get a beautiful sight during that process. My concentration and concept has been inspired by another photographer named Jim Zuckerman who I believe does an outstanding job of capturing the true beauty of light in nature and its true elements.
The principles and elements of design I am using would mainly be color along with some pattern and texture. To capture this concept I use a Canon camera, Adobe lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, and a tripod. The editing programs I use to touch up my pictures and the tripod I use to be able to capture as much of the light and detail as I can. For example Concentration #12 shows a lot of texture in the clouds and it shows the true beauty of light. This is sometimes a hard thing to get on camera because a camera does not capture what the naked eye can. These concentration pictures show the most detail in the shot with the clouds. When trying to capture the milky way I struggled because it only is visible at certain times of the year which made me thrive to capture it. A challenge I truly faced was how when trying to capture these moments it cannot be planned. Most of my pictures I was at the right place at the right time. And when trying to plan a location for a shoot I always failed in getting a truly beautiful sunset that day. You see the true beauty in our world when you aren't searching for it, but when you let it come naturally and just hope you are there to see it.
Concentration
The Tower #1
This shows the beautiful colors in the sunset and also shows reflection in the water to show even more colors.
Stary Road #2
This picture lights up the road and it shows how empty it is and how beautiful the stars are
Bright #3
This photo shows the beauty of the color yellow with the building that is in the picture. I feel like it is shining light on this building bringing out the story of the photo.
Corn Fields #4
This photo represents the colors through landscapes in the pictures
Wing #5
This represents the beauty of light in nature because it shows the light even when you are above the clouds and not on the ground.
America#6
This pictures uses framing and also has lines in the clouds which bring attention to the color.
Pink #7
This shows the beauty of light in nature with the colors on the clouds, without the clouds you would not see as much color
The Palms #8
This picture kind of reminds me of like a California feel, someone riding their longboard down the road with some sunglasses on. It has a beachy feel to it and I like how I can capture a scene that doesn't actually exist in a picture.
Trails #9
This goes with my concentration because it shows the beauty of the light from the stars and their path within a 15 minute span
#10
“The Palms”
This picture brings out a lot of color and lines.
Galaxy #11
This represents the beauty of light in nature because it shows the beautiful colors in the night time even when there is no sun. Our world produces colors on its own without actual daylight.
Concentration #12
“Birds”
I think the beauty in this picture is how the birds flew by and they just make the scene of the picture look absolutely stunning.
Breadth
Cracked #1
This represents rhythm and space, the cracks are also repitition
Dark #2
This represents dominance, she stands out very well in the yellow/orange colors with her black shirt and black hair.
Olden #3
This represents repitition and also minimalism, the old rusted look is very antique and also looks good with the pop of color.
Sky Line #4
This represents minimalism and color.
Spike #5
This represents color and texture
Tower #6
This can represent space and rule of thirds
Reflection #7
This represents repetition and color and reflection
Smokey Water #8
This is a blurred action photo, it makes the water appear smokey looking
Sequence #9
This is an action sequence photo which shows all of his shots from the beginning to the end.
Ears #10
This represents framing and also texture
Pig #11
This represets texture and some color, also framing.
Glacier #12
This represents color and lines with the glacier.
Quality
Concentration Evaluation
I would give myself a 4 on my concentration.
Why: I believe that my concentration does a good job showing the beauty of light in nature. I give a lot of variety throughout my concentration and a lot of colors.
Strengths: The variety I have shown along with how many different colors I show in every single one of my pictures. I really love how a lot of my pictures werent planned out. It was a struggle not being able to control the shot I was able to get however it made it that much more beautiful in the end because it truly showed me the beauty of light in nature.
Improvements: I wish I could have included more nature like animals and more landscapes but it was challenging because of where I live and having school and work.
Breadth Evaluation
I would give myself a 4 on my breadth
Why: I believe I do a great job of showing very different elements and principles of art and design. I also did a good job showing variety. I really enjoy the simplicity of numbers 1,3,4, and 5. They show a lot of different elements and principles of design. I like that I was able to include number 12 in my breadth, because no one else will have a shot like this. I took this in Alaska and not a lot of people will see a glacier in their lifetime.
Improvements: I think I could have included more portraits in my breadth along with maybe having more simple shots and more minimalism.
Quality Evaluation
I would give myself a 5 on the quality section
I think I did a good job bringing out my stronger side of photography which are my landscape photos. I like that I was able to include older images. I believe some of my older images are some of my strongest images I have taken. Image number 2 is one of my favorite because the original picture looks nothing like the processed. I was able to create a beautiful image through photoshop and lightroom to make it something completely different. Also the fourth image was a very unplanned image, I was at the right place in the right time.
Overall Score & Reflection
My average and overall score would be a 4. The thing I enjoyed most about this portfolio was being able to create works of art that I will always be able to have. I enjoyed how absolutely beautiful some of my pictures turned out. The challenges I faced were my Breadth. The assignments we had for breadth in this class aren't my strong sides of photography. I struggled because at the end because I had to shoot pictures for breadth and try to go through all of my old photos. The improvements I could have made were maybe shooting more breadth over the summer and not just concentration so the end process wouldn't be as stressful. I liked how I always knew what would be due because then I could get ahead if I wanted to. I enjoyed the potlucks in this class. The improvements I have are maybe not having so much of the Contest be the breadth assignment. I struggled with those projects rather than focusing on the simplicity of breadth. My advice for the upcoming AP students would be to get ahead so then you don't try and shoot last minute and not have a successful shoot. Definitely shoot over the summer
My Plans After Graduation
I currently plan on moving to St. George, Utah June 3. I will be working full time the entire summer and then the fall semester I will be doing online school at CSN while continuing to work full-time. After my first year of living in Utah I will be attending Dixie State University my sophomore year. I will minor in photography and my future goals as a photographer are to hopefully be a wedding photographer and continue maternity, baby, portrait, athletic, family and engagement photography.
