Charles & Jane Carroll Memorial Scholarship

Funded by Chick Carroll

Jane was a lifelong musician, professional organist and music teacher. Chuck was a man with many interests who would have loved to attend a four year college, but was unable to afford it. This award is given in remembrance of them.

Ryan Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship

Funded by Don & Pat Zimmerman

Don and Pat have been active volunteers since 1997 and feel this scholarship would be an investment in Solon's youth. Their son Ryan also felt that an education was the key to success. This scholarship, in memory of Ryan, will keep his dreams alive and give those students an equal chance to succeed.

Charles and Cecelia Geist Scholarship

As depression era young adults, neither Charles nor Cecelia were able to attend college, yet they made education a priority for their five children and supported their children's efforts to attend the college of their choice. This award is given in their memory.

Harold Fiala Family Scholarship

Funded by Phyllis Fiala

This music scholarship is provided by the Harold Fiala family. Harold, his wife Phyllis and their daughters played a variety of musical instruments. Their grandchildren carry on that tradition. Harold was a member of two bands. The Hawkeyes and the Jolly Bohemian Band. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has participated in vocal or instrumental music in high school and plans to pursue music in college.

Barry Sharp Scholarship

Many times the first step in a journey is the most difficult. Barry strongly believes that promoting first year scholarships will help Solon's students begin their journey to a higher education. He has benefited greatly from the support of others in achieving his goals and dreams. This scholarship is given in support of Solon's youth to achieve their goals and dreams.

Herbert Troy Wentzien Memorial Scholarship

Troy was very active in the Solon Community. He loved volunteer coaching through the years and touched many of the student's lives over those years. Troy was also very active in Boy Scouting and enjoyed camping, fishing and adventures, but most of all the growth he witnessed in the scouts as they experienced the same things right alongside him. This scholarship is in honor of all he did for this community. The recipient of this scholarship is one that has also made a lasting impression on the Solon Community.

Solon Dollars for Scholars Named Scholarship

Joseph “Joe” Hove Science Scholarship

Funded by Harlo & Kathryn Hove

The Joseph "Joe" Hove Science Scholarship is awarded to a student of exceptional character and academic ability who wants to major in a science or math related field. Joseph was a Christian who was enthusiastic about science and math as a way to learn more about God. In 2002, he won first place at the Iowa State Science Fair in the physics division and a second place award in physics at the INTEL International Science Fair. He was a member of the 2002 Solon High School Junior Engineering and Technical Society (JETS) team that placed ninth in the nation. Joseph died in 2003 at the age of 17 as a passenger in his family’s vehicle, which was hit by a speeding truck. His family has chosen to honor an exceptional science or math student each year in his memory.

Don and Rita Erusha Scholarship

Don and Rita Erusha have been active members of the Solon Community since 1965. They have been an important part of area growth and instrumental in the formation of such endeavors as the Solon Area Community Foundation, Optimist Club, Solon Care Center, Solon Library and Solon Beef Days. Care of the elderly, underprivileged and undereducated were at the heart of their service. This scholarship is intended for those whose life goals include similar service and commitment to their community.

Linda Matt-Slusher Family Scholarship

The Linda Matt-Slusher Family Scholarship is a scholarship to honor my parents, Albert and Betty Matt, for all they’ve done to help make me the teacher/counselor I am today. I proudly taught Business Education and subbed in the Solon School District from 1992-2020 in various positions and now am retired and enjoy volunteering and fundraising for worthy causes in the community. This scholarship is awarded to a student who shows integrity, is a strong leader and a hard worker; a student that gives back through community and volunteer work; and a student who is compassionate and so happy and willing to help others, even if it’s to clean dirty paint brushes or wipe clay off art tables or volunteer to be a gopher at SDFS fundraisers.

Solon Women’s Club

The Solon Women’s Club has been present in the Solon Community since the 1950’s. We are a part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs: a state, national, and international women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

Solon Women’s Club awards two $500 scholarships to Solon High School seniors who demonstrate volunteer work within the Solon Community and demonstrate leadership potential through their school and community involvement.
