Centripetal & Centrifugal Forces

Centripetal Forces

  • A factor that unifies or strengthens a states
    • P = Put together (unite)

Centrifugal Forces

  • A factor that divides or weakens a state. (may cause instability, balkanization)
    • F.U. = divide

Devolution

  • The transfer of power from a central government to a local or regional government usually due to an ethnic group’s demands resulting in autonomous regions, subnational fragmentation, or new state formation.
    • Physical Geography: mountain range in Kashmir
    • Ethnic Seperatism
    • Terrorism: ETA in the Basque Region or Al Qaeda in Sunnis Muslims
    • Economic Factors: Control of natural resources
    • Social Conditions: Rich vs. Poor, religion
    • Irredentism
  • Can lead to fragmentation of a state(country) or balkanization

Balkanization

  • In 1990s due to the mountain range in the area regions developed strong ethnic ties.
  • Broke into smaller countries due to violence in the area: war, deaths, and very hostile way.
