Black and White are values, not colors

In Physics, black and white are not considered colors. Both black and white don’t have any specific wavelength, they cannot be considered as colors. White is the combination of all wavelengths of visible light, while black is the absence of visible light. In physics, color is nothing but a wavelength of visible light. Thus, black and white are not colors.

ADDITIVE COLOR THEORY – RGB – CONSIDERS WHITE A COLOR

a color is made by mixing light of two or more colors. Adding all three primary colors of additive colors, that is, red, green, and blue, gives white. Thus, white is a color according to this color theory. Whereas black is nothing but absence of light, hence it is not considered as a color. Computer monitors and the television are examples of this system.

SUBTRACTIVE COLOR – CMYK

The subtractive color theory involves the mixing of paints, pigments, and dyes. The concepts in additive and subtractive theory are exactly opposite. The primary colors of this system are red, blue, and yellow (in art) or magenta, cyan, and yellow (printing industry). These when mixed, form the color black. Hence black is a color in this system. Whereas white is considered as the absence of color.

What is Value?

The next word on our list that an artist needs to understand to use color to its fullest potential is value. Value is a measure of how light or dark any given hue is. A value scale is an arrangement of the ten major values in a line from light to dark, with the number 0 representing white, and the number 10 representing black.

                                        

There are actually an infinite number of values between 0 and 10, but the human eye cannot distinguish them readily. So for all practical purposes, 10 values is enough.

To determine the value of a color that you’re studying, imagine where it would fall on a black and white value scale. A primary red is usually around a value 5, primary yellow is a value 2, and primary blue is a value 6 or 7 if your value scale runs from white-1 to black-10. It’s important to understand that you cannot change a color value without changing its saturation, and sometimes even its hue.

How to apply these principles of color to ceramics?

    • Where do you INTEND your piece end up? Kitchen, outdoors, hotel lobby, etc?
    • Does it need to function for food or does it function as an art object?
    • Color has an emotive response.
    • Some colors work better with food than others.
    • Color as social/political commentary/awareness

Project #1: COLOR

  • Pick a ceramic artist who uses color in a way that you respond to
  • Post on private IG page an image of your artist, their work, and in comments write about how and why they use color (this means visiting their website/asking them via email)
  • Choose ONE color you wish to use and WHY (post about choice on IG with image of inspiration behind color choice)
  • Choose the surface qualities of the color (matte, glossy, textures, etc)
  • Choose how you will apply the color (terra sig, slip, underglaze, glaze, etc)
  • Make at least 30 test tiles from the studio clay and utilize those test tiles to do a color run (value scale or blend of colors) Document your color research on IG (line blend or triaxial or biaxial blend)
  • Document batch/cost analysis of your color choice and the quantity you need to complete your project.
  • Create a ceramic form that utilizes your choice of color. It can be utilitarian or sculptural. Proposals must be approved before you start making.
