How can focusing on an object's minute detail or unseen structure (microscopy/X-ray) transform its meaning?

  • Still Life: Subversion and The Figure

How do photographers subvert or twist the conventional rules of still life (such as adding the human figure or capturing implied movement in a static arrangement) to create provocative images that comment on, or move beyond, the historical tradition?

Common Terms and Expectations

  • Engagement: producing work that demonstrates observable participating in the activity; “thinking” needs to happen on paper instead of just in your head.
  • Warm-up: a daily activity designed to develop creativity, divergent thinking skills, and can be inspiration or related to projects in the class; active engagement for full time given is always expected (so no stopping)
  • Work Time: making progress on the current activity that is observable
  • Wrap up: time to get the following tasks completed (and priority is in this order as well)
    1. Take progress image of work and add to portfolio doc
    2. Clean up area - put work, tools, and personal items away; as needed then wipe down work space including table and floor.
    3. Turn in assignment IF due on Canvas (can always do later if you run out of time, just do asap!)
