LHS IB Basics

• OPEN ACCESS - any student who wants to forecast for an IB class or the IB Diploma can do so.
• While some sophomores start IB classes, only Juniors and Seniors can test.
• 100% of LHS Students participate at some level.
• Different levels of participation
• IB Course Candidate: Select courses freely with option to participate in IB tests.
• IB Diploma Candidate: Complete specific requirements to earn the internationally-recognized IB Diploma.

Review: IB DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS

​

• 6 IB courses of study and registration for IB Tests
• ONE course in each of 5 REQUIRED AREAS: Studies in Language and Literature (English); Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics.

​

• ONE IB elective course: chosen from The Arts or a second course in Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, or Sciences.

​

• 3-4 studied at the Higher Level with the remainder at Standard Level.
• Higher level (HL) classes represent 240 hours of curriculum & are all two-years long.
• Standard level (SL) classes represent 150 hours of curriculum & can be one or two-years long.

IB DIPLOMA CORE REQUIREMENTS

​

• Theory of Knowledge (ToK)/Diploma Workshop over both years; essay and exhibition
• Write an Extended Essay research paper of 4000 words or less in a subject area and topic of choice.
• C.A.S.: Experience-based learning in the areas of Creative, Activity, and Community Service
• approximately 1-2 hours a week over 18 months.
• Includes sports, clubs, and other school-based opportunities
• Includes independent pursuits outside of school

PROS AND CONS OF DIPLOMA

• Required to have a well-rounded schedule that challenges you in ALL areas.

​

• Opportunity to write an Extended Essay, which helps prepare you for college research and writing.

​

• If you get high enough scores, some colleges will give you sophomore standing and/or scholarships.

​

• Helps increase competitiveness with college admissions/applications and prep.

Helps you to apply internationally.

​

​

• Required to take certain classes that you may not want to take (and test in them).

​

• It is a lot of work and will consume much more of your free time. Your social life will revolve around studying.

​

• Most colleges that offer IB credit will give it to you on a course by course basis. Some colleges may only give you elective credit.

English Course Selections

11th/12th grade English courses are all two year courses. You will choose a course 11th grade and complete it in 12th grade.

• IB Lit - Focuses on the literary works and analysis.
• IB English Lang & Lit - This course expands the study of literature to the study of language and there is a focus both literary and non-literary texts. (Film, podcasts, television, youtube etc.)
• More information on these options will be provided in your current sophomore english classes.

• Emphasis on algebraic methods
• Develop strong skills in mathematical thinking

Why are we only offering HL Lang and Lit?

In short: we realized this year that we were actually covering all of the content needed for the HL exam in our SL Lang & Lit course. Because of this, we are able to offer the HL class moving forward without changing anything about the way the course is currently designed. This is great news! More universities accept HL exam credit AND you can earn far more college credit from the IB test at the HL level. If you were considering registering for SL Lang & Lit then you should totally register for this option. Nothing has changed! Just the name! : )

Why are we only offering HL Lit?

In short: IB made some changes to the requirements for SL & HL. Because of these changes, we were able to change the SL class to HL by only adding one more book to the way the SL course was designed. This is great news! More universities accept HL exam credit AND you can earn far more college credit from the IB test at the HL level. If you were considering registering for SL Lit or HL Lit then you should totally register for this option!

• 65-80% of score is awarded by IB graders (External Assessment.)
• mainly exams, also English essays and portfolio projects
• scored by an international examiner
• 20-35% of score from teachers at Lincoln (IA)
• inquiry papers, orals, labs, portfolios
• work assessed by the teacher using an IB rubric
• scores sent and moderated by IB using student sample work
• due to IB in April

Things to think about while planning for your IB Experience

General IB: Planning!

• You will REGISTER and test in 6 subjects. Registration takes place in the fall of junior & senior years. IB testing consists of both an internal and external exam for each course.
• Most IB courses are TWO years long - BUT try and test in at least one subject your junior year. *This may be IB Chem or a One Year SL Elective. (You can test in a maximum of two.)
• Only seniors may register for HL exams.
• All IB courses must be taken at Lincoln
• You must be enrolled in the IB course to sit for the exam.
• Exams offered at the end of the course.

Advice from Seniors on why to challenge yourself

“I would say that IB is absolutely a challenge, but it's so rewarding to know that you are pushing yourself to an academic extreme with coursework that is interesting and engaging. The community you get to build among other IB students is miraculous, and all of the large projects we do truly advance our knowledge and understanding of the world, our perspectives of the universe, and with some classes especially, a lens with which to look at yourself.”

Advice from Seniors on how to manage the workload

“I would say that IB is fun, but that you have to pay attention. And that taking notes is boring and annoying, but that they will save the day. I had a friend who didn't take notes, and BOY do they regret it. So. Take notes. Please. For yourself. Be nice to yourself in the future. Don't be like my friend.”

“It's not too difficult as long as you're willing to put in the time.”

“I would say try not to get overwhelmed, everything is organized deliberately so if you stay on top of each thing as it's assigned it's totally manageable.”
