Challenges at landscape level?

  1. Increased gully erosion (vulnerable landscape) caused by overstocking and reduced land cover

  • Limited access to water and fodder

  • Inaccessible roads

McKNIGHT FOUNDATION

So what?

Engraving sustainability

Strengthening circular economy (i) (commercial tree nursery and seed systems

(ii) Shared capital contribution into CTN and seed systems

Increasing vegetation cover

Food& fodder crops

Community tree nurseries

Reduced Land Cover

Overgrazing

Charcoal burning

Cereal /legume/tuber intercrops African Foxtail grass, Boma Rhodes

Fruit, indigenous and exotic multipurpose trees

So what?

Engraving sustainability

Co-creation of knowledge in- diversifying SWC interventions through (i) Community led participatory interventions, (ii)

Commercializing SWC interventions SWC

Diversifying Soil and Water conservation interventions

Biophysical interventions

Mechanical interventions

Increased Gully Erosion

Reduced land cover

Uncontrolled surface run-off

Multipurpose food, fodder, trees and shrubs

Cut off drains, terracing, sand dams, check dams

So what?

Engraving sustainability

Efficient, synergetic & recycling ecosystem through (i)Draining water from cut off drains into crop fields or fruit orchards through terraces

Establishing mechanical interventions

Poor road network

Gully erosion Uncontrolled Sand Harvesting

Establishing cut off drains

Establishing sand dam road crossing

Community sand harvesting policy

What has been the success story?

  1. Community driven construction of sand dams and terraces – greatly reduced cost.
  2. Community tree nurseries - 3100 seedlings of gravelia planted. 2200 seedlings of mangoes ready for grafting.
  3. Merry-go-round model – farmers from different villages converge in one village after which they move to the next village.

What are the prevailing opportunities?

  • Engraving sustainability by commercializing soil and water conservation.
  • Engaging schools in the region
