Subitizing Activities
All activities have been adapted from SFUSD Math Core Curriculum
Title: Making Equations
Pass out page 1 of the cards and have students spread them out, face up so both partners can see all of the cards.
Students try to find two expression cards and one dot representation that match.
Allow students to use counters with number lines or linking cubes as needed.
Once both partners agree that the cards match, they should glue the cards onto the construction paper.
When all matches are made, pass out page 2 of the cards.
Guiding Questions
Where do you see this expression in the dots?
Are these cards equal to each other? How do you know?
Are these expressions equal to each other? How do you know?
→ Key Math to Observe
Do students solve each expression and work only with the totals, or do they look for subitized groups within the dots and expressions?
How are students determining the total number of dots? Are they counting all? Counting on? Subitizing? Not finding the totals?
Are students connecting the expressions and dot patterns to the strategies they have learned?
