Let’s Investigate

Step 2:

  • What meaning is conveyed by Zombie’s lyrics?

  • What literary and poetic devices did the Cranberries use in the lyrics?

  • How did the Cranberries’ musical choices effectively convey the song’s message?

Curricular Integration

Curricular integration is a pedagogical approach in which the concepts, content, and competencies of two or more content areas are combined to foster wider and deeper student understanding.

(McPhail, 2022)

Arts integration is a form of curricular integration in which a relationship is forged “between learning in the arts and learning in the other skills and subjects of the curriculum.”

(Arts Education Partnership, 2002, p. 3)

Fusion Arts Integration

9

Arts are used as a vehicle to learn non-arts content

Example:

Students use Zombie as historical record to learn about The Troubles, but don’t learn anything about the music.

Multidisciplinary Arts Integration

10

Students explore a common theme through the independent lenses of arts and non-arts content

Example:

In Social Science, students study movements for independence; in music, students study Zombie and other songs that describe the human tragedy that struggles for independence create.

Interdisciplinary Arts Integration

11

Arts and non-arts learning outcomes are achieved through a learning context that requires them both.

Example:

Students learn about The Troubles and perform Zombie in a way that effectively tells the story of the Warrington Bombing.

Transdisciplinary Arts Integration

12

Students tackle a real-world problem, issue, or role that requires knowledge and understanding in arts and non-arts content areas.

Example:

Students take on the role of musician-activist. Students learn about The Troubles and how Zombie was both a response to turmoil and a call for peace. Inspired by Zombie, students select a contemporary issue and compose an original activist song that calls for change.

Your Task

13

You are a musician-activist. You have been invited to perform an original composition at the Change the World Music Festival. Your song should use a metaphor to depict an issue that you want to change and inspire people to make that change. Your song must have original lyrics and music. Your song should have, at minimum, 2 verses, a bridge, and a chorus. Your music should effectively convey the message of your song. Prior to your performance, you will be interviewed for 1-2 minutes on the festival’s TikTok channel about how you want your song to change the world.
