Expand the brackets first!

Expand and simplify these expressions:

2 of 3

Examples

Expand and simplify:

6(2x+y) - 5(x+y)

= 6 X 2x + 6 X y + -5 X x + -5 X x

=12x + 6y - 5x - 5y

= 12x - 5x + 6y - 5y

= 7x + y

Solve but expand first:

5(x-2) = 4x

5x - 5 X 2 = 4x

5x - 10 = 4x

5x = 4x + 10

5x - 4x = 10

9x = 10

x = 10/9

Factorise::

24x - 18 = 4x X 6 - 3 X 6

= 6(4x - 3)
