How did we get here?

  • 1716 - French scholars and researchers wrote standards on the mechanics of materials, machines, and hydraulics,
  • 1756 - John Smeaton, the first man to call himself a civil engineer, designed Eddystone Lighthouse. Smeaton’s work was backed by thorough research, and his services were much in demand.
  • 1771 - Smeaton founded the Society of Civil Engineers to bring together experienced engineers, entrepreneurs, and lawyers to promote the building of large public works, such as canals and railways.
  • 1818 – Group of British men founded the Institution of Civil Engineers.
