It’s time to get into your YPAR groups. Today, our goal is to narrow your topic and begin formulating your visions, missions, goals, and research questions for your YPAR projects. Before we begin, let's review the YPAR Daily Rubric, so you know the expectations.

Step 1: Vision Statement

What is your guiding vision? This is what you would like to see happen in an ideal world if your problem or issue was completely solved.

  • Example- “Our vision is to have a community free from violence, where all youth feel safe and supported.”
  • The vision needs to be clear and motivating. It does NOT need to be attainable or realistic.

As an individual, each group member will (Smaller Post-Its):

  1. Write down your ideas of what your group’s guiding vision should be in your own words.

  • Take turns sharing your thinking. As each group member shares, you can add notes to your post-it.

As a group (Large Post-It):

  • Synthesize your group’s common ideas to create your vision statement on the large post-it.

Step 2: Mission Statement

What is your mission? The mission is what you will actually attempt to do or make happen.

  • Example- “Our mission is to increase understanding of youth’s perspectives on violence and youth’s experiences of violence in our school and community. Also, we want to show adult decision makers that young people can be part of making a positive difference for the whole community.”

As an individual, each group member will (Smaller Post-Its):

  • Write down your ideas of what your group’s mission statement should be in your own words.

Step 3: Goals

What are your specific goals? Imagine that you have finished collecting all your information and are ready to share what you found.

  • What type of impact do you expect?
  • What type of change do you want your findings to make?
  • What do you want to be able to share?
  • Example- (1) “To share research findings and recommendations with decision makers in our school and community.” (2) “To develop action steps for putting our recommendations into practice.”

As an individual, each group member will (Smaller Post-Its):

Step 5: Questions

What questions will help you better understand your topic?

  • Review your vision statement, mission statement, and goals.
  • Your questions should not be yes/no questions. They should be questions that will lead to you having more necessary background information and/or open-ended (begin with “why” or “how”). You should have 2-3 research questions. Type these questions into your document!
