History: Mexico- Contrasts in Geography

Types of Land:

  1. Tierra caliente

  • Tierra templada

  • Tierra fria
  1. Tierra caliente means "hot land." This climate zone includes the land with an elevation from sea level to three thousand feet. The weather is always hot and humid, with temperatures reaching over 100° F in the summer months. The rain forests, Gulf Slope coastal plains, Yucatan peninsula, and Baja California are included in this climate zone.
  2. Tierra templada means "temperate land." This climate zone includes the land with an elevation of three thousand to six thousand feet. The mild and pleasant climate of this zone is found in the Central Plateaus and the slopes and valleys of the Central Highlands.
  3. Tierra fria means "cold land." This climate zone includes the land with elevations over six thousand feet to the tallest peak in Mexico. Temperatures in this zone stay below 60° F (15.6° C) and are frigid in the higher mountains.
