General Disinfection Principles.

2.

A clean facility is the first line of defence against pathogenic microorganisms.

  • Use the correct grade of disinfectant for the application
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions exactly
  • Clean then disinfect
    • Visibly clean, smooth surfaces – clean & disinfect in one step
    • Soiled surfaces and/or porous surfaces – clean first & then disinfect (two steps)
  • Always wipe-down touch points
  • Allow stipulated dwell time
  • Observe expiry dates

ATP Testing is a great way to measure results.

Application Details

The air dry method is the recommended method for the disinfectant step on hard surfaces, as this enables maximum dwell time and enables biocides to continue killing microbes. With shiny surfaces like stainless steel, a wipe over will prevent water marks. Alternatively, use a non-smear disinfectant such as Kwiksan. Avoid use of cotton or microfibre cloths that have a negative effect on the disinfectant.

Furniture, tables, bedheads

Application Details

These surfaces must be thoroughly wetted when cleaning and disinfecting, to ensure the pores are cleaned. Wiping surfaces down (agitation) is also important to remove organic matter from the pores. Avoid the use of a cotton or microfibre cloth which has a negative effect on the disinfectant.

Sensitive Surfaces.

Application Details

Ensure disinfectants are compatible to the surface and will not corrode

sensitive surfaces, damage paintwork or polish, etc. For electronics and

other hydrophobic surfaces, use alcohol-based disinfectants with an

indirect application by pre-moistening a cloth or using wipes. Avoid use of cotton or microfibre cloths, which have a negative effect on the disinfectant.
