Goals of the program

This apprenticeship program aims to…

  • Create an accelerated pathway to teaching for our high-quality MPS employees and community partners
  • Diversify our teaching workforce so our students can see themselves in their teachers
  • Close the opportunity gap for our students through growing members of our community to become highly effective teachers for the MPS context.

What is an apprenticeship?

How is this program different than traditional teacher prep?

  • Earn Bachelor’s degree and your teaching license in Special Education-Academic and Behavioral Strategist (ABS) or PK-6 Elementary education.
  • 2 year program*
  • Continue to work for MPS in Apprentice position.
  • Take coursework through Minnesota/Metro during the day as a cohort.

Academic and Behavioral Strategist (ABS) License

  • Work with students with mild to moderate needs across multiple disability areas from Kindergarten through age 21 in the areas of:
    • autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
    • developmental cognitive disability (DCD)
    • emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD)
    • other health disorders (OHD)
    • specific learning disabilities (SLD)
  • Another cohort in 2026

PK-6 Elementary Education License

  • Teach in Prek - 6th grade in all general education settings
    • Unique licensure that includes PreK-6
    • Support students learning across content areas (exp math, English, social studies, science etc)
    • Starting initial cohort in 2025

(5 Week Blocks of 2 classes)

Eligibility Requirements

You are eligible to apply if you:

  1. Are currently employed as an ESP or a community partner
  2. 10 Transfer Curriculum Goals Areas completed or AA*
  3. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher*
  4. Are seeking an initial teaching license and bachelor’s degree

We strongly encourage BIPOC and multilingual candidates to apply.

PK - 6 Program Schedule at a Glance

Aug 2025 - May 2026

  • Observe, learn and co-teach model to start
  • On the job 4 days/wk and 1 day coursework.
  • Engage in various experiences to enrich cross-cultural competency

June 2026-

Aug 2026

  • Co-teach with a highly effective PK program four days a week
  • Take coursework one day a week in a cohort model

Sept 2026 - July 2027

  • Finish coursework and co-teaching with Journey teacher
  • Finish licensure and Bachelor’s degree

Program Costs and Benefits

COSTS

  • Our Goal: Tuition and related cost are zero dollars for you all.
    • FAFSA completion
    • Grant funding (MDE, Metro State, MPS)
    • North Star Promise = Any household that makes less than $80k can get free tuition.
  • A lot goes into that and it is not guaranteed.

State Tuition Costs

  • 6 semesters = $28,000
