Why give students choice in the classroom?

Pear Deck Question: Which reason is most important to you? Explain.

  • Motivation
  • Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci 1985):
    • Autonomy
    • Competence
    • Relatedness
  • Provides Personalized Differentiation
    • Student-Centered
  • Gives Alternatives for Showing Mastery

Article Resource:

β€œMotivation is a subject that is constantly discussed in the field of education. Teachers are taught not only to teach their students, but to motivate them to want to learn. As students get older, intrinsic motivation tends to decrease; therefore it becomes more difficult for teachers to motivate students (Ryan and Deci, 2000a). According to self-determination theory (Ryan and Deci, 2000a, 2000b), students' needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness must be met in order to experience positive social development and growth. When these needs are met, students experience high levels of self-motivation. Offering choice in the classroom is one way to increase student motivation by appealing to students' needs for autonomy and competence. In the fields of marketing, economics and social psychology, decision-making research is examined as a way to shape consumers' preferences.”

Rubric Building for Choice Boards

Tips:

  • Standards Focused
  • Mastery Based
    • Not graded on effort
  • Ample Opportunities for:
    • Differentiation
    • Using Data to Inform Instruction
      • Based on the data, you can assign "choice" groups:
        • G1 = Exceeded Mastery & Extension, G2 = Basic Mastery & Support Activity, G3 = Did NOT Reach Mastery & Re-teach
        • A = DOK 3/4, B = DOK 2, C = DOK 1
        • *This approach combines differentiation and choice

Time to Create Your Own Choice Board!

Design Tips:

  • Start with a template; you can use any of the exemplars on slide 8.
  • Standards Based
  • Start Simple then expand to increase amount of choice
  • Set a goal to incorporate some element of student choice in at least 1 assignment per week/every other week
  • Optional Ideas to Consider:
    • Student Interests (can poll them, or have them create a student interest slide deck)
    • Data Driven (differentiated assignments based on student mastery level)
    • Choice in What students learn
    • Choice in How students learn
    • Equal vs Varied Rigor
    • Equal points vs Varied points
    • How long will each assignment take to complete?
