ZOOM – BEGINNER’S GUIDE

  • Zoom has been in use for many years prior to Covid by the APCUG club we belong to in the US
  • We have been using Zoom weekly for teaching and meetings for 4+ years
  • Very easy to use for anyone
  • My goal is to teach the basics and assist you to become more familiar with it in your learning goals and interests

CREATE AN ACCOUNT FOR FREE

  • In your browser go to zoom.us and click on Plans and Pricing at this link
  • Go to Basic – Free and sign up with an email and a password
  • You can use this account to host your own 40-minute sessions with family and friends for free

INSTALL ZOOM ON YOUR PC/LAPTOP

  • Go to https://zoom.us/download to install the current Zoom version
  • Please note there are many updates, and you should always update it prior to attending a Zoom, sometimes it will update itself
  • Once installed on PC/Laptop, double click to open. Then in bottom right corner look for the Zoom icon
  • Right click, Check for updates

INSTALL ZOOM ON YOUR PHONE/TABLET

  • If you have an Android Phone or Tablet, go to the Play Store to get Zoom
  • If you have an Apple iPhone or iPad, go to the App Store to get Zoom
  • The controls are much different than on a PC/Laptop for viewing and seeing people

REQUIREMENTS NEEDED

  • If using a PC with a monitor, you will need a webcam and speakers
  • If using a laptop, you will have a built-in webcam in the lid as well as sound
  • When using your phone/tablets you will be using the camera in the front of the device, so you must have it in a stable position

3 WAYS TO JOIN A ZOOM

  • If you are emailed a link or see a link in the VCC Calendar, just click on the link – it will most likely open in your browser
  • If you have your own account – launch Zoom and sign in, then JOIN the meeting with the details given in the email
  • You will need a meeting ID and passcode

THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO DO WITH YOUTUBE

  • To effectively SUBSCRIBE TO your favorite YouTube channels, it makes it easier to sign in with your Gmail account
  • When you SUBSCRIBE you can go watch episodes by topic
  • You can watch on a Phone, tablet, Chromebook, PC, Laptop, TV
  • You can use via browser or the YouTube APP

APCUG YOUTUBE VIDEOS

  • Throughout the month APCUG which stands for Association of Personal Computer User Groups sends emails for you to sign up to a topic of interest you may have.
  • They are all on Zoom since they reside in the US.
  • We pay a yearly fee so that our computer club can have access to these presentations

HOMEWORK!

  • Ensure you have the latest Zoom installed
  • Create a FREE account if you want
  • Try joining a Zoom with the Computer Club – go to the Calendar to see the links or Meeting Code/Password
  • Join an APCUG Zoom
  • Sign in to YouTube and Subscribe to some of your favorite interests – it’s limitless
